    1. Changing signature - Help
    2. Hi I am having a series of complaints about my signature on letters I send. I have a set up signature as most of you will know from the list. However on some letters it changes. My signature _http://www.elkingtonfamily.com_ (http://www.elkingtonfamily.com) comes up as normal followed by the same address in brackets except that elkington is now spelt 'elklington ' with an extra 'l' inserted. I have written to myself and it was OK. But other people seem to receive this altered format. Is there anything I can do. Any suggestions please :-)) Best wishes JUDY ELKINGTON _http://www.elkingtonfamily.com_ (http://www.elklingtonfamily.com/) ELKINGTON-L@rootsweb.com http://www.one-name.org/profiles/elkington.html

    3. A useful map, but Water Lane is not named on it. You can find it just to the south of the southernmost bend of the River Don, because, already in 1890, there is a 'Police Office' marked next to it. It runs north from the junction of Bank St and Castle St. Hugh in Sheffield ----- Original Message ----- From: <JJupar@aol.com> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 18, 2005 12:10 AM Subject: Re: [SHEFF] Parish Unknown > > In a message dated 17/06/2005 21:47:26 GMT Standard Time, > kcoones@antelecom.net writes: > > gr-gr-gr grandfather was a "Hawker" by trade and it was when he and his > family were in Sheffield that their eldest son, Daniel Hanniff (age 21 months) > passed away. 3. For the benefit of other lister-members: "He died on August 26, 1846 and it was registered on August 28, 1846" Water Lane was where the South Yorkshire police headquarters is, near the markets in Sheffield - so, in the centre of the town. I note from one of the pub books that The Ship was at 31 Water Lane. The Ship Ct [Court] was probably associated with the pub. The nearest burial places would be Sheffield Parish Church (now the Cathedral) and St Paul's. I have the index for the first of these but I cannot find this child. In fact I am struggling to find any people with this surname in the resources I have. Do you know where it comes from? 3. Hi Ken, Had done a bit of sleuthing and found those places you mentioned and I wonder.......having just checked a lot of the 1841 census if the family name could be Harris.???? Hanniff just doesn't ring any bells at all. However........ I have looked at the 1881 census for England and found the family in Bristol as you said but I also turned up " Hanifin" as a family name being from Ireland and a Chelsea Pensioner with a son born in New Zealand. So I wonder if your Sack Hanef could be Jack (pet name for John) Hanif and he served in the Army in Calcutta. Just thoughts....... Kindest regards. 1. Death Location
    2. ken
    3. Hi again Hugh, Tracking this family has really been a job and a half. The baby's father is recorded as Sack Haneff or John Hanniff. He was born in Calcutta, East India. He married Hannah Falkner or Faulkner in Bristol, England. That is where the baby, Daniel Boxale Hanniff was born in 1844. After the baby's death they may have traveled to Leeds, and then to Manchester, Lancastershire, and then back to Bristol. This is where I found them in 1861, In 1871 I found the father, John Hanniff in Bath, Somerset, the mother Hanniff with her aged parents James and Lucy Godwin. Two of the children were found in Industrial Schools in Warwick. Eventually the family ended up in Mandan, North Dakota, America. The best clue I have is that if the last name begins with a "H" and ends with an "F" or two f's. It is possibly our Hanniff's. I do want to thank you for pointing me to the possible location of Daniel's place of death. Many thanks, Ken

    3. Hi Marie I've just had a look at my map and Froggatt Lane is right there in the city centre. At the moment from what I can remember it is flanked by old buildings (on one side at least) that would certainly have been involved in cutlery. I know this because in recent years I have been attending Sheffield Hallam University which is one street away and I used to park my car next to Froggatt lane (I've just found out). I also used to come into that part of Sheffield many years ago to collect cutlery but I guess few streets anywhere in Sheffield escaped the cutlery trade. Next time I go to a meeting I will take a look to check out if I am thinking about the right street and I will check out the lower part of the lane to see what is there. > Does anyone have any information about Froggatt Lane in the 1840's, such > as was it in the centre of the city of Sheffield or was it on the > outskirts of Sheffield.? 2. Janet Booth
    3. Hi everyone I have been trying to no avail to research my family tree I have asked previously for help from you guys with no luck. I am hoping this time will be better. My father Ernest BOOTH and his brother William BOOTH both were born in Ecclesall. My father when he was alive told the family that he and his brother were made orphans during the 1914-1918 great war and that they were brought up by Barnardo's in Sheffield. After contacting Barnardo's and getting them to search their archives I am told that neither of these brothers are on their lists. They have suggested the Sheffield and Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouses whose records are held by the Sheffield Archives. Can anyone help me to find out how I can access these records. Details of which I need to find are of : William BOOTH born 11 Feb 1915 and Ernest BOOTH born 20 May 1916. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Janet Western Australia

    3. That wonderful programme on BBC 2 earlier this year, which showed us those marvellous black and white images from Mitchell and Kenyon, gave us a glimpse of the Sheffield United goalkeeper William Henry ( fatty ) Foulke. I commented on this list at the time concerning that great character and received some interesting replies. I have just read ' Colossus - the true story of William Foulke ' by Graham Phythian ( interviewed by Radio Sheffield's Jimmy Carol on the Saturday morning show ) published by Tempus Publishing Ltd, The Mill, Brimscombe Port, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 2QC www.tempus-publishing.com The book contains information which will be of interest to the many amateur family historians subscribing to this list. Before I proceed, it's important to relate that I have received permission from Tempus Publishing to quote from the book. Foulke was born at Old Park, Dawley ( suburb of Telford ) Shropshire, 12 April 1874. His birth certificate gives his name as FOULK. On the 1881 Census at 122 Primrose Hill, Blackwell ( between South Normanton and North Wingfield ) the name is FAULKS. He preferred FOULKE, whereas his wife's preference and the name on his gravestone was FOULKES. His mother is recorded as Mary Ann ( no reference to her maiden name ) There is no information on his birth certificate regarding his father and in 1881 when his younger brother was born, there is still no mention of his father. William married BEATRICE HELENA DUFF, daughter of ROBERT DUFF, a railway goods guard, at Holy Trinity on Nursery Street in Sheffield, 22 June 1896. Witnesses at the wedding were Beatrice's brother, JAMES WILLIAM EYRE DUFF and EDITH MAGGIE WASHINGTON. Bride and Groom both lived on Marcus Street, Pitsmoor in Sheffield. William at No 37 and Beatrice at No 170. Their first child John Robert, was born in Blackwell March 1897. Daughter Selina was born 1903. James Rigby born 1907 died 1913 Stanley born 1909 and died 1910. In 1899 William and Beatrice were at 8 Belgrave Square, Sheffield ( Highfields area, close to United football ground ) In the 1901 Census at that address they had living with them Robert age 4, William Redvers age 1, LOUISA MATTHEWS, niece and a boarder NELLIE LAMBERT, age 24, born Scotland. The Sheffield United Manager at that time was TOM BOTT, once a Sheffield fishmonger. In 1903 William bought a General Store and Beerhouse at 29 Asline Road, corner of Colver Road ( Highfields area ) In 1908 there was a brief move to 363 Bramall Lane and then William became a Publican at ' The Duke ' 11 Matilda Street. His stay there was also brief, moving to a shop at 10 Matilda Street in 1910. William died 1st of May 1916 at Sister Tate's Nursing Home, 426 Glossop Road ( on the site of the present Royal Hallamshire Hospital ) He is buried alongside his wife in Burngreave Cemetery, Sheffield. I hope this article produces some discussion, surrounding such as connections with names mentioned, the Highfields area of Sheffield and Sister Tate's Nursing Home. Perhaps some of you on the list could relate information from books on other characters from Sheffield history, where information is provided on relatives, locations, people connected and relevant dates. A recommended read for football history enthusiasts ! Roger Stevenson in Sheffield
