They produced Edward OXLEY b1811 Sheffield and Mary OXLEY b1823 Rotherham. Mary may have had an illegitimate son but definietly married William WELLS b1821 Retford, Notts. Son of Mary, James OXLEY b1847 Rotherham went on to marry (10 April 1887) Charlotte SAYLES b?? Rotherham. Not sure whether these are connected with my other OXLEY's though. 3. As Sarah was 40 in 1851 and there's no reason to suppose this was the wrong age, then she would be the Sarah OXLEY daughter of Thomas and Hannah born and baptised 1811. She married Samuel BRADFORD 10 MAR 1828. It looks like this could well be the right family. In the 1841 census Hannah OXLEY is living a couple of doors away and is independent. Did Thomas OXLEY marry Hannah JEPSON in Rotherham in 1808? Unfortunately OXLEYs a very common name in the Sheffield and Rotherham areas. 3. Hello List, Re the thread of the Oxley family, I have a connection to a Frederick Oxley, b. Sheffield 1855, who married Caroline Johnson Jun 1877 in Sheffield; she was the daughter of my 2 Xs great grandfather Robert Johnson, a 'Joiner' born in Hull, who moved to Sheffield with his wife, Elizabeth Johnson nee` Thundercliffe...they had children both in Hull and Sheffield. Caroline Johnson was born in Sheffield. Frederick Oxley was an edge tool striker. He was living at the time of the 1881 census at 89 Hodgson St. Ecclesall Bierlow. He was living with his wife Caroline, his 1 month old son James, and his brother William Oxley who was 27 years old. William's wife was named Clara, she was 28 years old. Their children were Son John 7 years, Harriett 5 years, Polly 2 years and William 7 months. Hope this adds to the equation... Kindest regards, Josephine Ontario, Canada. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Liz" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2007 12:26 PM Subject: Re: [SHEFF] Oxley > Let's keep the OXLEYS going then!!!!! 3. Hi Alice, Before civil registration in 1837 you have to rely on parish records of births, marriages and deaths, which started around 1550. Unfortunately, even though the incumbent was supposed to maintain clear and complete records (legislation introduced by Elizabeth I), this didn't always happen and pr's are almost nowhere complete either in terms of individuals or data (which tended to get shorted as it was transcribed). For deaths there are probate records (assuming your ancestors left a will) or burial records (National Burial Index on cd) or the pr's held in records offices. Many baptism and marriage records have been filmed by the Mormons (they don't seem as interested in deaths) and have been transferred to the International Genealogical Index (IGI); the IGI records are often "contaminated" by personal entries from LDS members who think they've linked to a particular individual and it's better to use the confirmed extraction series, which only contain, as it says, records which have been confirmed. A useful site for these is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page otherwise the LDS's own site (http://www.familysearch.org/) may help you further. If you know where your ancestors were born and married, a visit to the district registry office and searches through the copies of pr's they hold is extremely useful (and often the only way to get real confirmation of your data). 3. Hi Liz, I know LDS are (supposedly and presumably eventually) transcribing the Cathedral pr's after 1813 but St George, St Mary & St Philip were Millennium churches and some of the confirmed IGI records extend to 1870. St George's opened for baptisms in 1825, burials from 1830, St Mary baptised and buried from 1829, St Philips baptised and buried from 1828. Has no-one transcribed these pr's to a searchable database for the period before 1837? Regards John Liz wrote: The only church available in Sheffield in the period that is recorded in the IGI was the Cathedral so I think it's unlikely that the other churches will be recorded. You can, however, obtain the Marriage Certificates for the marriages after September 1837 so there is really no need for the IGI to record those marriages. 3. Hi all, Is there a specific reason why Sheffield parishes are so poorly represented on the IGI confirmed extractions for baptisms and marriages? I know the LDS has been granted permission by the bishop to film the Cathedral outside the periods noted on Hugh Wallis' site, but what about all the other churches that aren't on the list (St Philip's, St George Portobello, St Jude's, St Luke's etc.) Does anyone know if there are any plans afoot to film and extract these parishes? 2. Who were the convict exiles? Convict transportation to New South Wales effectively ceased in 1842 but between 1849-50 exiles were transported. Exiles had served part of their sentence in a penitentiary in Britain and were granted a conditional pardon or ticket of leave on arrival in the Colony. Convict Exiles transported on the following ships are included in this index: Adelaide, Anna Maria, Bangalore, Eden, Hashemy, Havering, Joseph Somes, Mt Stewart Elphinstone, Maitland, Marion, Thomas Arbuthnot and Randolph. This might explain why John Davis did not do much yime in prison. Regards Judy
