Hi Does anyone know the whereabouts or what is available of records for the old Sheffield Royal Infirmary? A relative of mine is trying to find out about a surgeon that worked there in the mid 1800s. He thought it was still in existence but I told him it was now a supermarket. Have I got that right? Regards Tony Beardshaw My History

Two events which are part of Walkley Festival: Thursday 14th June 7-9pm Bird walk led by RSPB member John Robinson Although this isn't a history-related event I will be there with my cemetery plans and will be happy to answer questions or offer help finding graves. Sunday 17th June Cemetery Tours 2pm, 3.30pm, 5pm Three chances to learn about the history of the cemetery and some of the people buried there as well as enjoy the semi-wild beauty of this Victorian cemetery. The cemetery is in Nichols Rd (approach from Waller Road) in the Rivelin Valley. Both events will start from the noticeboard just inside the gates. Hugh Friends of Walkley Cemetery

Hi John. In 1907 he could be buried in any of the cemeteries you could try contacting City Road bereavement services. Had any of the family died before him...? Could there be an existing family grave. http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/environment/how-we-work/bereavement/cemeteries/city-road City Road Crematorium opened on 5 April 1905 by the Lord Mayor, Joseph Jones and was the tenth crematorium to be built in the UK. The first cremation took place on 24 April 1905 Kind Regards Angela (LEE) Eckington U.K. _________________________________________________________________ Try Live.com - your fast, personalised homepage with all the things you care about in one place. http://www.live.com/?mkt=en-gb
I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help me. My grandfather Frederick Hume (Fred) died in the last quarter of 1907 in the Eccesall Briely district of Sheffield. Q1. Which cemetery may he might have been buried in, or does anyone know of a telephone number for the burial office in that district. Q2. Did they have cremations in those days and if so, how does one find out details. Thank you for taking time to read this regards John Hume Nottingham BAKER-PROSSER - LONDON BEAL - 1883 - SHEFFIELD BOIK - 1823 - SOUTH AFRICA/SCOTLAND BROGDEN - 1800 - COLLINGHAM YORK BROOKS - 1853 - ROTHERHAM BUCKLAND - 1880 - NOTTINGHAM CATER - 1929 - SHEFFIELD CLARK - 1825 - HULL/INKBERROW CRAWSHAW - 1886 - SHEFFIELD GIGG - LONDON HARRISON - NOTTINGHAM (SNEINTON) WILSTROP - YORK ALWAYS LOOKING FOR HUME, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

Hi The district your Grandfather died in is called Ecclesall Bierlow and there are at least six parishes within this area. Do you know which was you grandfather's parish and then it could be looked up for you. Don't know whaat happened to my last message; but here we go again. Can anyone tell me, under what circumstances would a coroner register a death and not any next of kin? Presumably if there were no next of kin, but would there be any other reasons? Presumably if there were no next of kin, but would there be any other reasons? Hi Gill A coroner usually gives permission to register a death when the death took place in suspicious circumstances. For instance an accident, or a murder, or anything other than unsual circumstances. He would sign the certificate stating that he was the Coroner. This notebook transcription was very interesting! After reading it, I wonder if the author was some kind of clergyman or clerk, as he made quite a lot of entries regarding church construction and legal events. And just for the record, the Isaac Howard, sexton of St. Phillips who was accused of exhuming bodies, is no relation to me, LOL! Brilliant Gordon. Lots of useful names in there as well as an interesting insight into local events at the time. I like the entry "riots in Wardsend cemetery". Was it the inmates revolting I wonder ?
