    1. Re: [SHEFF] registering a death
    2. gill buttery
    3. I have obtained the death certificate and death was caused by an accident; he was knocked down by a car. As the coroner was the informant, there are no names of relatives to help verify it was my relation. I was hoping the occupation might help, but it doesn't really. He was aged 92 and had his occupation as 'sub-postmaster retired'. Is it likely he had been a sub-postmaster for a number of years. Is it an occupation you are likely to have been in for a while, or could it be an occupation to 'take-up' in your later years? I have him at aged 63 as a saddler. As you may have guessed, I'm clutching at straws here! Gill In a message dated 08/06/2007 21:18:27 GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Can anyone tell me, under what circumstances would a coroner register a death and not any next of kin? Presumably if there were no next of kin, but would there be any other reasons? Hi Gill A coroner usually gives permission to register a death when the death took place in suspicious circumstances. For instance an accident, or a murder, or anything other than unsual circumstances. He would sign the certificate stating that he was the Coroner. _________________________________________________________________ The next generation of Hotmail is here! http://www.newhotmail.co.uk

    2. I am visiting Sheffield from drought-stricken Brisbane. We lost electric & phone at Middlewood Rd for 36 hrs. Alas, it also prevented a meeting to which I had looked forward from taking place. Because of the risk of more flooding this weekend, we have to leave sheffield 4 days early, so can't keep the new meeting on Sunday. Also, didn't get to Chesterfield Library to check newspaper files. Still, we've enjoyed re-visiting Sheffield. John Fisher QLD Australia

    3. Hi Kay Thanks for your concern :) We have been lucky enough to avoid the floods and just had our power cut off for 32 hours, so we have lost two freezers full of food, but it is all insured so no big problem. Just down the hill from us at Hillsborough and at Winn Gardens there are a lot of people who have been flooded out completely. We took a huge casserole down to the comunity centre this lunch time to use up the meat that had defrosted from the freezer, being thrifty Sheffield types ;) If anyone wants to see photos of the floods there are lots in this thread on Sheffield forum, some are amazing. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=230117 regards Janet www.researchingrelatives.co.uk

    1. [SHEFF] Mini YORKSGEN at York in July 3 rooms available 15th - 21st July
    2. Jane Lachs
    3. Morning folks, Only 2 weeks until we meet up in York again for our mini YORKSGEN meeting 8th - 22nd July. The house is booked. Only a small group this year: fully booked the first week (10 people) and 3 rooms still available for the week starting Sunday the 15th July. Open to all subscribers who'd like a week or part week in York for research / holiday. Basically: it's a chance to use cheap (75 pounds a week per room) accommodation provided by the University of York to meet up with old friends, meet new friends (all interested in genealogy !!) and get some research done. The Borthwick is 10 mins walk away. As a holiday base to explore York and the surrounding countryside you can't beat that price either :-) For those of you who are new to the list: you can read more about it here: http://www.yorksgen.com/ Jane LACHS and Janice WOOD PS. This is the "MINI" YORKSGEN. Which means we won't be organizing coach trips, lunches and dinners. If that's want you want then start saving up for next year :-) After saying that: we do often join up in groups of 2 or more to visit the archives elsewhere in Yorkshire.

    1. [SHEFF] Vernon WILDGOOSE alias MARSHALL
    2. Hi Hugh Thank you for the information on Vernon Wildgoose and the School in Netherthorpe. I have seen the census information etc and have just ordered the birth cert of Gerald Wildgoose - fingers crossed. Kindest regards Dave Netherthorpe School is close to Well Meadow Street. The address in 1901 was Bethel Street, though it is now listed as Netherthorpe Street (the same building though, I believe). Searching the Sheffield Archives catalogue at http://www.a2a.org.uk I found this... Sheffield Education Department, School Records Catalogue Ref. CA 749, CA 767-769 Creator(s): Sheffield Education Department [from Scope and Content] Netherthorpe School, attendance registers; sample paperwork re: Nursery Voucher Scheme [CA 767]; .... No dates listed and other school records under the same headings were very recent. Some schools keep hold of their records. You could always ask the school if they have theirs. You can search for their contact details here: http://eduplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/schools/ Could this be Vernon's birth: GRO Births MAR Qtr 1891 Wildgoose Gerald Ecclesall B. 9c 364 ...and could he be the imaginatively recorded 'Jerrala' Wildgoose 'g.dau' aged 1 month in the 1891 census, in the same household as Melland Wildgoose?

    2. Hi All I am trying to learn more about Vernon WILDGOOSE alias MARSHALL who was living at 17 Well Meadow St, St Annes, Netherthorpe, Sheffield age 10 on the 1901 census. Full name given as Vernon Gerald George Marshall on sons marriage certificate. I believe that his name was changed to Marshall before his Army service started (1915) and his marriage took place later. Can anyone tell me what school he was likely to have attended around 1901 please? I think that I need to try to find him in any school records if this is possible. I believe that Vernon WILDGOOSE was the son of Ann Milland/Melland WILDGOOSE. He was born around 1891 in/around Ranmoor, Upper Hallam, Sheffield. Thanks Dave (UK Derby)

    3. Beth If you are coming on business, can any of your contacts help you with the birth record. I know I have helped, and been helped by my business contact, either giving you a UK cheque for pounds sterling, or even ordering it on line for you and paying with their credit/debit card and then you giving them the money. Alternatively call in any Post Office you have time for a buy a Postal Order in UKĀ£ for the amount needed for the record, you can send for it at your leisure then. 3. Beth, being here in North Carolina, I envy your trip to the cemetery. May I suggest that if you have a digital camera, take it with you and snap as many close-up shots of grave markers as you can, and when you get back home, crop and edit them, and submit them to www.findagrave.com and/or www.interment.net. And for all of you who live in Sheffield, the next time you're in a cemetery, take some photographs and put them on the above sites. You never know who might benefit from your genealogical act of kindness. 3. I don't think there should be a problem doing this in 3 hours. The main uncertainties will be, the time it takes to find the right plot in City Road (a very large cemetery) and the time it takes to order the certificate at the Register Office (which is now in the Town Hall). You can of course order certificates by post (information at http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-copy-certificates ) but it looks as though payment may be a problem as they don't accept credit cards. Getting a taxi from the station to the cemetery will certainly save time. As an alternative you could get supertram from the back of the station to Spring Lane which is c 100 yards from the cemetery (but probably 300 from the main entrance). Coming back you can either go back to the tram stop and get a tram to the Cathedral or get a 94/95 bus down City Road which also stops opposite the Cathedral. The Town Hall is just the length of Fargate from the Cathedral - 1 minute walk. I don't remember seeing lockers in the station, but there are certainly lockers in the interchange (bus station) which is 1 minute walk from outside the (front of) the station. if you chose to go there to leave your bag you can get a taxi from there as well.
