Don't worry. Everybody is either away or dealing with horrendous floods in Sheffield. It has been a big disaster area here and our steel works have been destroyed as the cold water flowed over the red hot furnaces exploding them and putting many men out of work. Many shops have lost their entire stock and over a 1000 people had to spend the night in the Town Hall and some will never be able to return to their homes and have lost everything. In Catcliffe area of sheffield, the water was up to the roofs and the damage will run into billions just in Sheffield. Of course now many other parts of the country are under water and I think Noah and his Ark would have been a great help as the whole country is devasted by horrendous floods. I think family history will not be on anyone's mind for a while and they have probably lost their computers in the water. My commiserations for all who are suffering so much from the wet in the UK. We have two deleted submitters this week as their emails are bouncing. All their surnames have been deleted and will have to be sent in again if they are to be included in the database. 3. Hello folks. I am new to this list. What a great website you have assembled! My wife (Margaret Wheelhouse of Glasgow) has ancestors Richard Wheelhouse 1820-1882 b Killamarsh Derbyshire died Sheffield and Mary Ann Morley b 1829 Hollinsend Sheffield died 1909 Sheffield. They married 1846 Sheffield. I am keen to find parents for Mary Ann - or indeed any connection. I believe 7 of their surviving children remained in Sheffield whilst Albert went up to Glasgow. thanks JOHN SHAW AUCKLAND NZ.

    1. Re: [SHEFF] 1851 census (Supra street)
    2. Charlotte Edwards
    3. Hi Angela, Thanks for the correct street name. I have bought the only two certificates in the GRO that are close and they are not the correct ones. Knowing the street and district location will help me. Perhaps he isn't registered, or perhaps the birthdate that has been passed along is out by a year. I thought that I might try looking at some parish records if I couild figure out the nearby churches. I have found this 1890's map http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~engsheffield/streetrelated/1890smap.htm <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eengsheffield/streetrelated/1890smap.htm> I have been looking at the above map and have found Sussex Street between the River Don and the Sheffield Canal just above where the railways cross. I see three churches: To the south on Broad St, to the East on Tinsley Rd, and to the west on Mowbray St. I have looked at the Genuki list of churches, but cannot match any of these with the churches listed on the link below with any certainty http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Sheffield/ChurchesOfEngland.html I have also looked up St. John's, Park, Sheffield in google but cannot find any reference to the parish records, and can't see that it is listed on the churches that have been filmed on www.familysearch.org. Can someone familiar with this area of Sheffield suggest which churches were nearby and in existence in 1853? My second question is - "Does ecclesiastical Parish" in a census indicate the nearest parish church? Thanks, Charlotte Edwards Vancouver, BC, Canada >From: "A. 1. [SHEFF] 1851 census (Supra street)
    2. A. Treweek
    3. Hi Charlotte. Welcome to the list. The name of the street in the 1851 census is "Sussex" St. I have had a hand in transcribing the indexes for Sheffield Register Office, only the year is entered in the index so it automatically defaults to 1/1/YYYY. As Charlotte was living in the Sheffield Park District, I would try for a birth certificate in the Dec Q of 1853 or March Q 1854. Also bear in mind that not all births were registered before the births and deaths act of 1874. Before 1875 the onus was on the registrar to register a birth, after this the responsibility passed to whosoever was present at the birth, and a penalty was introduced for non-registration within 42 days. If you can't find Joseph's birth certificate...see if you can find one of the other childrens and this will confirm the mothers maiden name. St John's Park district is on the corner of Bernard St and Cricket Inn Rd...It is not St John's at Owlerton Kind Regards Angela Eckington U.K. _________________________________________________________________ Celeb spotting – Play CelebMashup and win cool prizes https://www.celebmashup.com/index2.html

    1. [SHEFF] ROSS
    2. Ron & Gisela
    3. Hi List, Is anyone following a ROSS line, I have a Mary (Ann) ROSS, born approx. 1843 (as her age on her marriage cert. to Charles WARBURTON in 1863 is 20). On other censuses she appears to be aged about 3 years younger). Her birth in 1871 (aged 27) in down as Rotherham, Lancs (and off course I know that Rotherham is not in Lancs). On 1881 (when she is a DENTITH, living with her WARBURTON children, she is down as born Salford, Lancs. Same on 1891 census, and then reverts back to her widow name off WARBURTON in 1901and is born as Salford. I cannot work out any reason why she would put Rotherham, if she was not born there? Just hoping that anyone out there may have her in any other earlier census (1851 or 1852) as she may have had siblings that someone maybe researching? Her father was John ROSS, occ. striker in 1863. Thanks in advance for any answers. Regards Gisela Australia

    1. [SHEFF] WRIGHT, SANDERSON, ELLIOTT and help with streetname in 1851 census (Supra street)
    2. Charlotte Edwards
    3. Hi I have just joined the Sheffield list as I am doing some research on my husband's family from Sheffield His mother's family include Joseph WRIGHT (bn 1853 Sheffield) and married to Martha SANDERSON (bn 1854 Sheffield) lived in Sheffield in 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 then came to Canada first in 1903 with most of the family following in 1905 James ELLIOT (bn abt 1852 Sheffield) and married to Thirza DAVIES (bn abt 1854 Dudley, WOR) Their daughter Eugenia Beatrice ELLIOT married Albert GOODLAD. He died about 1910 and Eugenia Beatrice (ELLIOTT) GOODLAD came to Canada and married Austin WRIGHT (son of Joseph and Martha above. ========= The mother of Joseph WRIGHT (1853) is Caroline WRIGHT (transcribed as Wight) in 1851 is living at the following census location in Sheffield 1851 Census: HO107 / 2341 folio 17 p. 26 District Sheffield, sub district Sheffield Park, Enumeration District #1 and I have Supra Street written down. Is this correct? I cannot find it on any recent maps so perhaps that street no longer exists or I read it incorrectly. The census information also says Eccl Parish St. John -- would this be St. John Owelerton on the parish map of Sheffield? I am looking for her son Joseph who has a birthdate of 21 Dec 1853. I have tried a couple of certificates from the GRO indexes which are near that date with no luck. I have also found Joseph 1/1/1855 48 16 Sheffield North on the Sheffield City Council site, Perhaps Joseph was registered in 1854 . Does anyone know what this date on the Sheffield City Council site means? All the dates are listed as 1/1/ year. Another possible is : Joseph 1/1/1851 16 39 Sheffield Park is also on the Sheffield City Council site, but 1851 is two years earlier than what I understand his birthdate to be. Most census info indicates the 1853 birthdate is correct. Her husband Joseph WRIGHT is still in Mattersey, NTT in the 1851 census, but they are both in Sheffield RG 9 / 3481 Folio 91 p. 8, Sheffield, Eccp Par St. Philiips in the 1861 census. I have to get the birth certificate , but I suspect Caroline's maiden name is BISHOP. Is anyone else researching any of these families? or can anyone me if I have the streetname correct? Thanks Charlotte Edwards, Vancouver, BC, Canada

    2. A. Treweek
    3. Hi Don. The records are deposited with the London Metropolitan Archives. check out http://www.a2a.org.uk/ Held at: London Metropolitan Archives HM Prison, WandsworthScope and Content The records, ranging in date from 1847 to 1984, relate to prison administration, the prisoners, and, to a much a lesser extent, the prison staff. The earliest records are a minute and letter book, 1847-1850, and a letter book, 1848-1852, of the Committee for building a new prison in Surrey (ACC/3444/AD/01/001-002). With regard to records relating to prisoners, the main series is the nominal registers (ACC/3444/PR/01), giving details of the name, age, trade, education, and religion of the prisoner, the date of committal, details of the offence and sentence and the date of discharge. These are in chronological order and run from 1879 to 1956, with several volumes produced each year. Unfortunately, there are only a few indexes to these registers. Those that survive run from 1940 to 1956 only (ACC/3444/PR/02). The other important series giving details about individual prisoners are the registers of executions, 1892-1961 (ACC/3444/PR/03), and files on condemned prisoners, 1933-1954 (ACC/3444/PR/04). Also of interest is a series of glass plates of prison officers and prisoners from 1920 to the 1930s. Kind Regards. The name of the groom is James COCHRANE not COCKLIN. The hand written H in COCHRANE could, of course, be a K The 1881 census has a prisoner in H. M. Prison, Wandsworth named as James COCKRANE . Could anyone advise me if it is possible to find details of his record ? Don Cocklin Co. Durham

I am looking for information on Ann BRADSHAW b.1885 in Sheffield. Her parents were Thomas BRADSHAW and Jane. Ann married John Charles OLDALE in 1920 in Eccelsall Bierlow. If they were under 21 then I will give you their age so that you can look up their births, Sometime certificates say of full age [over 21] or if you are lucky they give the age over 21. You can obtain one on line costing £7. which is the current rate from _http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/login.asp_ (http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/login.asp) All you need is the year, place, quarter, volume and page number which in your case is 1920 - Ecclesall B. -Dec - 9c - 742. 1. [SHEFF] Vernon WILDGOOSE alias Vernon Gerald George MARSHALL
    2. Hi All Further to my recent message: I am trying to learn more about Vernon WILDGOOSE alias MARSHALL who was living at 17 Well Meadow St, St Annes, Netherthorpe, Sheffield age 10 on the 1901 census. Hi full name given as Vernon Gerald George Marshall on his sons marriage certificate. I believe that his name was changed to Marshall before his Army service started (1915) and his marriage which took place later. I believe that Vernon WILDGOOSE was the son of Ann Milland/Melland WILDGOOSE. He was born around 1891 in/around Ranmoor, Upper Hallam, Sheffield. >>>>>>> I have now obtained the birth cert for Gerald Wildgoose bn 10 Feb 1891 and his mother was Ann Melland WILDGOOSE father not given. I also have the death cert for Ann Melland WILDGOOSE in 1913. Unfortunately she died in Hospital so the informant was not a relative. Can anyone have a look at the Electoral Rolls/Registers for 1911, or close to this year, for any WILDGOOSE or MARSHALL entries living in Paradise Square, Sheffield. I know that this is a lot to ask but I am hoping to get an address for the family in 1911 so that I can pay to find them on the 1911 census. Thanks Dave
