    3. Apologies! In my last e-mail I gave the marriage year of the parents of John SHUTTLEWORTH in Wakefield, not the date of his baptism. That should have been Aug 1780. Begin forwarded message: From: Margaret Elliott <[email protected]> Date: 29 August 2007 16:14:14 BDT To: [email protected] Subject: Shuttleworth I need help please with two problems. The first is my inability to find Hannah SHUTTLEWORTH on the 1841 census. She was born in 1781 in Wakefield, in 1835 was living in Broomspring Lane Sheffield, and in 1851 was living with her son Henry on Robert Street. My second problem concerns her husband John SHUTTLEWORTH. I cannot find his birth. There is a John SHUTTLEWORTH born in Wakefield in 1771 which agrees with his death age 54 in 1835, but this John seems to have died in 1797. Is there a birth in Sheffield that might fit? John was a joiner. Thank you for any help Regards Margaret Switzerland

    1. [SHEFF] Gangs in Sheffield
    2. Rita Effnert
    3. I remember my father talking about those gangs. Although we lived in Chesterfield he used to travel to Sheffield every day to work there, times were very bad. One night he was walking to the bus-stop with a workmate and a gang attacked them, they knew it was their pay-day and the beat the other man up and took his wages. My dad was lucky to get away with a few bruises. He lent the other man half his wages to tide him over. Rita in Germany

There are lots of threads about the Mooneys and the gang wars at http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk Although I haven't read it people recommend JP Bean's book 'The Sheffield Gang Wars'. My grandad was supposed to be friends with them and I was just wondering what they got up to! Hi They were very much feared by the people of sheffield at the time. The Mooney gang cause a great deal of trouble in Sheffield in the late 1920's. Many sheffield people, including my parents were frightened of them and I believe special hardy policemen were brought in to control them. They ran protection rackets, gambling rackets and in fact anything that caused trouble and brought them illegal money. Have a look at this site which will tell you more about them. _http://www.polfed.org/1003zero-effect-zero-tolerance.pdf Regards JUDY ELKINGTON [W.R.Yorkshire, England] www.elkingtonfamily.com [email protected] www.one-name.org/profiles/elkington.html _ (http://www.polfed.org/1003zero-effect-zero-tolerance.pdfRegardsJUDY ELKINGTON[W.R.Yorkshire, England][email protected]/profiles/elkington.html )

Can anybody tell me anything about "Grays Building" St Marys Bishophill Junior (Part of) I found this on an 1841 census list for my family and there seemed to be many people living in the same place. I don't think it was a Workhouse because most of the people had occupations. Thanks for any information. Sheila Dixon

    3. .How com there is hardly any information on this place. there is a few places on the net to look but not much with trade directories or anything else. I am searching for the families Lowe and Redefearn. Sarah redfearn and her children were buried in the quaker grounds at woodhouse. but there is no age for the kids given in the book i was sent or his two wives. Is this normal only to have the name and year. sarah died in 1829 and his second wife Elizabeth Lindley in 1811. Can anyone enlighten me into anything to do with the area or the quakers. thanks marea in tassie . --------------------------------- Sick of deleting your inbox? 3. Hi all My thanks to all who responded to my message. You have certainly helped to make things more clear for me. I think I have to go along with "Building Contractor, General Labourer". It is known he was a bricklayer in the 1960/70s so it does sort of fit. I was put off somewhat trying to figure out why a private was listed as a general "labourer". However, now its clear that the civilian occupation was included it does make sense. 3. I would agree with you on all points. On my own birth certificate it gives my father's military information (this was during the war) and underneath it, it says "Electrical Engineer Oil Company" so they obviously gave their military and civilian jobs on certificates which was a great help. I make it: Private (N.S.) 23342368 R.A.O.C. = Royal Army Ordnance Corps (Building Contractor's General Labourer) My interpretation is that (if you are correct with the N.S.) he was doing National Service, but his civilian job was a Building Contractor's general labourer. Hi Marea, Firstly the area is called Handsworth-Woodhouse. It has a stong Quaker connection and there was a graveyard there. However that has now been taken into someone's garden and is no open to the public as far as I know. The Quakers of that area used to travel great distances to worship and conduct their ceremonies when the meeting first started in the C17. The Lowe family were certainly part of the congregation but I know nothing of the Redefearns. I believe the records are now held in Sheffield Archives. 2. Gordon, I am sure that the first word in the bottom line is "general" (100% sure) Fo the rest, my best guess is that the first two words are "building controller's" (66% sure) and that the final word could be "servant" (25% sure). Regards. Peter Charles in rural Buckinghamshire

    3. There is a Christiana HANDLEY aged 21 in the 1841 census at Sheffield Haymarket. She is listed as a female servant (FS) at an Inn. The landlord is a William BICKLEY. The reference is HO107/1337/3 page 12a I think I would send for the marriage certificate, which will give the fathers name and occupation. The closest I can find for a George GORDON is in Rotherham and he is aged 15 ( ages were rounded down on the 1841 census) so he could be 15-19.
