    3. Karen has very kindly sent me the reference for the marriage of Richard ELLIOTT and Sarah SMITH in Sheffield Cathedral on 12 October 1801. It is 1/179/338 I am anxious to know if Richard was a widower, and who witnessed their marriage. Can I request someone going to the Sheffield Archives sometime to look this up for me please? I should really be most appreciative Regards Margaret Switzerland

    3. Hi Margaret :-) According to private submissions on the IGI a Tabitha ELLIOTT married Joseph SHAW 1790 in Glossop, Derbyshire and then had 7 children there. Worth checking on maybe :-) Cheers Jane -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Margaret Elliott Sent: Monday, September 17, 2007 3:25 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SHEFF] Fwd: Ann ELLOT/ELLIOTT (and variations) I cannot believe how quiet this list is at the moment, so am hoping someone will have time to help me with the following: Ann ELLOT was born in Handsworth, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah ELLIOTT, in 1740. In 1760 she gave birth to a daughter Tabathy, and in 1763 to a son Richard. No father named. I am assuming she did not marry, but have not thus far been able to find her death in Handsworth. The copy of the bishop's transcript I was able to look at was very poor, and illegible in parts, so I wondered if any sort of index was available for it? Her son Richard married in Sheffield, so it is possible she had moved her family there. Does a record of her death appear on any Sheffield Indexes? Is there a reference to Tabathy ELLOT in either Sheffield or Handsworth Thank you for any help or information Regards Margaret 1882 Switzerland (this is a copy of a message sent earlier which seems to have been lost. 1. Re: [SHEFF] SHEPHARD, SHEPPARD ET AL
    2. Carolyn and Darryl
    3. Hello All, I don't know whether I've posted this question, so apologies if I'm repeating myself. Ancestors of the above surname (in its many variations) were supposedly married in Sheffield an then came to Australia sometime in late 1858 or early 1859. I 'think' I can pinpoint this approximate date because George and Charlotte's 3rd daughter was born in June, 1859 at Rockley, near Bathurst, N.S.W. George SHEPHARD(sic) says he was b. in Yorkshire about 1829. Charlotte (who says her maiden name was also a variation of SHEPHARD) says she was b. in Derbyshire, about 1832. There is no marriage in England I can find of two SHEPHARDs. They apparently came to Australia with 2 little daughters, Hannah Elizabeth and Sarah Ann, aged 4 and 2 in 1859. Have been unable to find them on any ship, so maybe they were unassisted. George gives his parents as James SHEPHARD and Sarah WINTERBOTTOM. James was supposed to be a farmer. Charlotte does not know the names of her parents, but says that her father was a farmer also. I have been unable to find either of them on the 1841 and 1851 Census. The IGI has no marriage of a James SHEPHARD to a Sarah WINTERBOTTOM. Does any kind lister have any idea which I could follow up or (dare I hope??) is researching this family? (A small possibility springs to mind that George may have been married before and his wife died, then met up with Charlotte and they never actually married.) There is a George SHEPHARD who married an Emma STREET (dau. of Samuel STREET and Hannah BARTHOLOMEW), who died in 1857 (Free BMD). I know this seems to be 'plucking at straws', but I'm totally brickwalled. Best wishes, Carolyn in Bathurst N.S.W. Australia. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. 3. Hi Carol, I have been looking at your photos of your trip, there are some lovely places. You were very lucky with the weather! I am in awe of how much ground you managed to cover in a short time! For Sheffield souvenirs, there are two shops which sell just Sheffield items, one on Surrey Street and one on Ecclesall rd. I googled and found this shop which sells online, I have no connection to them, so I don't know if they are any good, but it looks as though they might have what you are looking for. http://www.madeinsheffield.com/ regards Janet www.researchingrelatives.co.uk - your local friendly professional genealogists.

    3. Hi Carol, I've just been looking at your England trip photos - thank you for sharing them. Pleased to hear you enjoyed your trip to Sheffield but sorry you didn't find the souvenir shop, especially as you were so close to it when you took that lovely photo of the Town Hall. The road running down the left hand side of the Town Hall in that photo is Surrey Street and there is a shop called Sheffield Scene just a few yards along that sells souvenirs, books and products made in Sheffield (cutlery, silverware, pewter etc.). What type of souvenir would you have been looking for? Kind regards. In Sheffield, We did manage to visit my Great Grandfather-William George Liversidge's grave, as well 2 of his previous homes and the location where a third one would have been. We had a wonderful time in Sheffield. We stayed at the Premier Travel Inn, fairly close to the train station so we managed to walk everywhere! Sheffield was a very clean city...the only complaint I have, is that we were unable to locate any souvenirs at all!! I managed to get mementos from London, York, Harrogate and Dover...but not one from Sheffield! 3. Hello Angela, Thank you for the information regarding Samuel's grave, this adds to the information which I received from Beverley. I have been stuck for some while on these burials, and at long last feel that I have knocked down a brickwall. The James referred to could be Samuel's son, James Sampson Fowler, he was born c1844 in Leek, Staffs and I can't find him on the 1881 census, so I will check the Death indexes and hope that he will appear. Can I say that I am very impressed with this list and will certainly ask for more help when I need it.
