    3. An e-mail to <[email protected]> might get you the information you need: with a specific date and name a look-up by the archivist or staff member shouldn't take too long, and they would also know the dedication of "the parish church". Not sure of their charges, but the e-mail you send could ask this. There is also a phone number 0114 203 9395, but be aware that they close for stocktaking in November. There's a download available (in two formats, Word and pdf) listing the registers which are available. 3. Hi Jack, Try the Borthwick Institute - http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/bihr/ - I've had several from there myself. Usually about GBP 5 a throw if you can give them a probate date so they don't have to search. If the will was dated 1857, the implication is that the testator was alive and well enough to have a will drafted for at least part of that year. Probate may have been granted after the cut-off date above. At only £5.00 for a search, you could take a chance. It's certainly cheaper than trawling through archives yourself. See also http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/infoabout/civil/probate/registries.htm for a list of regional offices. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" Sign away your life Tin Soldiers - Stiff Little Fingers

    2. Dear all I wonder if someone can help me with a wedding lookup? I have an ancestor, William SCATCHARD, who married a Sarah in Sheffield on 1 Oct 1730. I could do with finding out which precise church and whether her surname was recorded. For the moment, I'm guessing the Parish Church, but does anyone have access to this register to double check, or a Sheffield-wife index? Many thanks in advance. Matthew

    1. [SHEFF] Eccleshall Union Workhouse 1891
    2. John Readman
    3. Hi all, One of the surnames I have been researching is the Musson family, who were clockmakers and jewellers. William Martin Musson Wm Martin Musson, 53, watchmaker, born Louth was living in Eccleshall Bierlow in 1891, and in Hallam in 1901. His son, also William, aged 22, a law solicitor's clerk in 1891, was in Eccleshall Union workhouse in 1891, when it seems to have full of all sorts of professional men, so I wondered if it was being used like a YMCA, when I thought no one was encouraged to go to the workhouse as conditions were so harsh inside. Has anyone else on this list have relations who were in this workhouse then, or know what was the workhouse was used for in 1891? I have looked at an excellent website about workhouses in the area and according to the photographs on the site and the maps it was of a fair size at one time. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?EcclesallBierlow/EcclesallBierlow.shtml John Readman

Can SKS thus please find a burial entry for a Thomas FROST between 1836 and 1828? This would possibly be in the St Philips or St Georges area. Thanks so much Jack Frost

    3. Hi Jeanette Does your Nicholson interest embrace Sarah Nicholson b1827 Sheffield, father was George Nicholson, birth date as yet unknown. George was a Cutler, and my Gt (x4) Grandfather Sarah married John Holmes b1826 Sheffield on 26 Feb 1845 in Sheffield. John was a Coal Miner. They produced 10 children starting with Henry Holmes b1846 and ended with Walter Holmes in 1869, all in Sheffield. 3. Dear All, Being an ex-Heeleyite the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border was the Meers Brook, part of which runs in Meersbrook Park before being culverted under Valley Road (including the cellar of my grandfather's house!), then flowing into the Sheaf somewhere by the end of Albert Road. It was here there used to be a toll bar across London Road. In Canon Odom's History of Sheffield, Heeley is described as being full of dodgy characters who would skip across county boundary whenever the bailiffs appeared!! Meer means boundary and the brook was the boundary between Northumbria and Mercia, between Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and between the Provinces of York and Canterbury. Chris Reaney (S.
