Hi Julie. Smilter Lane was (roughly) where the workhouse and children's homes were. Hello list I am Julie Nicholls from Norfolk researching members of KEEGAN family who moved to Sheffield from Hull in late 19thC. I am revisiting the list and wonder if there is anyone out there who could tell me whether the above address in Pitsmoor would have been a private house in 1917 or an institution? A relative of mine was born there but another address was given as the residence of her mother. Many thanks in anticipation. Julie
Hello Tracey, Welcome to the List. There are a number of avenues that could be pursued:- 1. There could be a contemporary newspaper report of the events - I have found that similar thefts e.g sheep stealing were often reported. Do you know where the counting house was situated? The newspaper report might give further details such as William's marital condition; his trade; children etc. 2. It is quite likely that if William was a native of Sheffield and the crime took place in the Sheffield area that his original conviction would have been either at Sheffield or sometimes Rotherham. There are records for these courts held at Wakefield Record Office. Hope this helps Phil Ford www.researchingrelatives.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- > Hi List, > I am new to this list and i am researching William WOODCOCK who is > my 4xgreat grandfather. > William was b abt 1797 > according to his convict papers his native place is Sheffield > He was tried and convicted at the York quarter sessions on the 30th April > 1821 for breaking into a counting house and was subsequently transported > to > Australia. > My query is where do i go to find more information on this gentleman > And what possible records would be available and as he was convicted in > York > is prehaps a diferent mailing list more appropriate?

Hi Gordon, You might try the Genuki Leeds page, under Churches/Church of England Churches http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Leeds/index.html You'll find it right at the bottom, complete with a grid reference under the photograph. Jon, The main limitations of hand held readers are the small viewing area and low magnification. If you are using this type on fiche with few images per sheet, you'll be ok, but for sheets with maybe 80 or more images, they're a waste of space - you'd go blind trying to read with them! The plus is, they're light, will fit in your pocket and can be used in research centres (usually) without any hassle. If space is a limiting factor, I'd go for a portable reader such as an Informant II, Case II, Case IV etc. All of these come up on Ebay fairly frequently, usually going for anything from £20 up to around £120 or so - obviously depends upon condition and how many folks want it at the time. A plus with portables - and especially those I mentioned by make, is they will usually operate on a 12V battery pack as well as 240V. They are also dual magnification of around 24/48X mag. A big advantage with the Informant II, is that the image is projected into the lid of the reader - and removing the lid enables the image to be projected onto a wall or projector screen! Hope this helps Kind regards John Woolsey (Bridlington, UK). 1. Hand Fiche Reader (Jon Bradshaw) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2007 13:24:08 +0100 (BST) From: Jon Bradshaw <[email protected]> Subject: [SHEFF] Hand Fiche Reader Hello all Can I ask is anyone has seen or indeed bought one of the few hand held fiche readers on the market that seem to be mainly sold by American companies? I was wondering about purchasing one but would like to know if they are any good and worth the outlay, they still seem pricey for very little? I dont particularly want to buy a large reader due to cost and bulk (my wife would complain about more clutter!) and I haven't come across any being thrown out by the companies discarding these old bits of kit. I only have a few fiches that I'd like to view at home if possible. Recommendations and opinions welcomed. Regards Jon Sheffield No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. My uncle has a direct line to the Bosville family with a Jasper Boswell in 1577, he in turn goes back to 1070 to John De Bossvile, apparently his father was William the Conqueror's Standard Bearer. Is there anyone out there who is also related to this family so that I might be able to help my uncle who is now 85 and would be interested in any answers. Also looking for anyone who may be connected to the HUME family. Thank you. The first national memorial dedicated to the men and women of the United Kingdom Armed Forces (Regular and Reserve) killed on duty or as a result of terrorist action since the Second World War. The start date is 1 January 1948, which follows on directly from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which commemorates those who died up to 31 December 1947. http://www.forcesmemorial.org.uk/index.asp Cheers Jane

Hullo John I can't help you with your request but do have an interest in the surname MUSSON, partucularly one WILLIAM EDWARD MUSSON who was born 6 March 1831 in Burton Coggles, Lincolnshire. His parents were WILLIAM MUSSON, born 8 Nov 1791 at Hough, LIN and Penelope Coulson, presumably from Lincolnshire. In researching the surname MUSSON I find there are great hordes of them in Lincolnshire - still worth the enquiry to see if any of theses names turn up in your research. WILLIAM EDWARD MUSSON was a doctor in Clitheroe, LAN [as was his son REGINALD COULSON MUSSON]. There is a tenuous Sheffield connection - WEM's wife was SUSSANAH CATHERINE ROBINSON. Her brother ARTHUR INGRAM ROBINSON was married to ROSANNA CHAMBERS of the Sheffield steel manufacturing family of Chambers Newton. I told you it was tenuous! My wife's great grndfather HENRY JOHN ROBINSON was a brother to the ROBINSONS mentioned above and brother in law to WEM. There is also a Rev FRANCIS MUSSON [1821 - 1895] in the mix. Talking of hordes another sister, one MATILDA JANE ROBINSON married one, NORMAN WATNEY of brewery fame. The WATNEYS seem to have occupied most of south central and south west London. They are everywhere. As always with genealogy it is a feast or a famine! "The Geograph British Isles project aims to collect geographically representative photographs and information for every square kilometre of the UK and the Republic of Ireland" It's surprising what turns up on this site. Use your imagination and the advanced search. E.g. A search for Bolsterstone turns up 2 photos and a search for Bradfield none But using a search of Bolsterstone and everything within 10 km I find 777 photos :-) Including churches, shops, panoramas and single farm houses that I "know" from the BMDs and census. The only drawback is that's it's very slow. I think they need a new server :-) www.geograph.org.uk °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° Cheers Jane One Place Study A village 8 miles north of Sheffield www.bolsterstone.net
