Welcome Vic to the Sheffield List in your new role and thanks to Gordon for his efforts on behalf of us all. Still looking for Greatorex's Mike Greatorex Harrogate, England. Looking for Greatorex's in North Notts, Sheffield, Orange Co, NY, USA and Alabama. http://www.freewebs.com/greatorexfamily/
Unlike the usual pursuit of genealogists, I am tryng to come forward with one of my Sheffield families. I would like to locate the descendants of my grandfather's only sister, red-haired Beatrice Jarvis (nee Smith) born about 1898 in Heeley. (Her father was Joseph Ryals Smith and her mother was Mary Smith (nee Watson and she married a John Jarvis). She had only one girl, Winnifred Jarvis b. 1920. (There were brothers too, one being Willie Jarvis, I think.) Winnifred may have married an Albert Pike in 1941. After this point, I have 'lost' the trail. Even though searching for names like Jarvis and Smith is like looking for needles in haystacks, I am casting my net anyway. Any information or advice would be much appreciated. Chris in Ontario

All the best for the New Year to you and all listers. I have just one question regarding the Eng-Sheffield homepage. Or rather the link to G. Piper's genealogy page where he used to offer CD scans of a Sheffield newspaper for sale. I can no longer find this and would have liked to acquire one or two of his CDs. Do you know if they are still available? Thank you for any help you can give me. Judith Gaillac Montfermeil, France
"Researching Relatives" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [SHEFF] Family Scena in Sheffield before 1780 Wrote on the first of January "The information on the IGI (Family Search) is taken from the Bishops transcripts, there is a small possibility that there may be more details on the actual register entry, such as the fathers occupation." Presuming that he is only writing about the batch imputs by the mormon church this is not always the case the entry in the IGI usually gives the film/ type of record it is transcribed from. for internet IGI entries click on Source Call No. on familysearch.org to find out. I would agree that there is sometimes more information on the parish register than either the bishops transcripts or the IGI kind regards John Ferguson

Hello Jean-Claude >I look for the origins of my ancestor Thomas Scena (sosa 72), >baptized February 22, 1772 in the St Peter's cathedral of Sheffield >(see the site of FamilySearch). >In death certificate, in France, I read that he was born in Schiffex >(handwriting). Where is Schiffex or is it a translate's mistake ? This is probably Sheffield which has been mistranscribed, but if you would like to scan it and send a copy, or upload it to a website then I would be happy to have a look for you. >Is it possible to find to Bishops Transcripts ? Where do I find >Bishop's Transcripts for Sheffield (Cathedral St Peter) before 1780 >with Internet ? The information on the IGI (Family Search) is taken from the Bishops transcripts, there is a small possibility that there may be more details on the actual register entry, such as the fathers occupation. You could order the film of the Bishops transcripts from the Latter Day Saints if you have a FHC near to you. >Thomas's father is Joseph SCENA (sosa 144) and mother is Elisabeth >VOCAIRE (sosa 145). I have no information for Elisabeth Vocaire. I couldn't see a record of this marriage, but there was a Joseph Scena married an Elizabeth Walker in Barnsley (which is close to Sheffield) in 1769 on the IGI, could this be a mishearing of the name Walker? >I believe that Joseph's father is Thomas SCENA (sosa 288) married >with Hannah HAMMERTON 16-9-1744 in church St Mary of BARNSLEY - >YORKSHIRE (see FamilySearch). You would need to find more documentary evidence to support the IGI information as it is notoriously limited and should not be used alone to construct a family tree. >It is very difficult to find informations before 1800. It is certainly easier if you are in the area, as a lot of records are held at local archives. Bonne Annee :) Phillip Ford www.researchingrelatives.co.uk

Hello, I'm French and new member. I wish you a happy new year 2008. I am searching informations for a connection with my family. I look for the origins of my ancestor Thomas Scena (sosa 72), baptized February 22, 1772 in the St Peter's cathedral of Sheffield (see the site of FamilySearch). In death certificate, in France, I read that he was born in Schiffex (handwriting). Where is Schiffex or is it a translate's mistake ? Is it possible to find to Bishops Transcripts ? Where do I find Bishop's Transcripts for Sheffield (Cathedral St Peter) before 1780 with Internet ? Thomas's father is Joseph SCENA (sosa 144) and mother is Elisabeth VOCAIRE (sosa 145). I have no information for Elisabeth Vocaire. I believe that Joseph's father is Thomas SCENA (sosa 288) married with Hannah HAMMERTON 16-9-1744 in church St Mary of BARNSLEY YORKSHIRE (see FamilySearch). It is very difficult to find informations before 1800. Can you help me to complete my tree ? Thank You and Happy new year. Jean-Claude

Happy New Year to everyone. I also would like to thank Gordon for all his hard work and welcome Vic as our new List Administrator. Researching HIGGINS, CONNOR, KEETING (KEATING ETC) Sheffield. Donna in Ontario, Canada
It is good to have you as new list administrator. As so many of us bounce over the Sheffield/Derbyshire border it will be good to have the connection. Greetings All! Gordon has now "retired" from List Admining and I'm sure that we all wish him all the best for the future. His management of the ENG- SHEFFIELD list over the years has enabled so many to find the families they've been looking for - thank you Gordon for all you have done. And me? I'm not from Sheffield, or even Yorkshire, but my wife is. She was born in Sheffield, and spent her early years in that part of Yorkshire which has moveable boundaries with north east Derbyshire! I hail from Derbyshire. We've lived most of our lives in southern Africa, returning to live in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a few years ago. I'm not new to List Admining, having helped with the Derbyshire (DERBYSGEN) list for a number of years, as well as Admining the AFR- ZWE (Zimbabwe including Rhodesia) and SPENCER-UK Lists. My wife's interests are in the CHAPMANs and WHALEYs who also lived in Sheffield, or close by. Most appear to have roots back in Derbyshire. You probably won't notice any changes now that I've taken over from Gordon - the alterations I make will only affect the reports that I receive when member's ISPs misbehave and bounce mail. I do, however, enjoy a List where posts stay on topic, and will mostly stay in the background, but will always be here if I'm needed. So, again Gordon, all the best for 2008. I'll do my best to continue where you have left off. Vic Brocklehurst
Hi all I would like to thank all who contacted me offering to take over as list admin. I will get around to responding to you all asap. I have decided not to wait until the end of this month before giving up the list. The first day in the new year seemed more appropriate. As from today I will no longer be administrator to Eng-Sheffield. Your new list admin will be introducing himself shortly. My thanks go out to all who have put up with me for the past 7 years (well, all but a month). I hope you all find the rellies your searching for in this new year. Regards Gordon
Hi and Welcome, It is nice to meet the new admin. I hope you will enjoy your time with us. Sorry that Gordon is leaving but he has had a good innings. Thank you for your help Gordon. A Happy New Year Judy Elkington
Hi everyone! Well this is my New Year Wish List - To find new rellies within the following family trees BEASLEY BULLIVANT DEWEY GLEADALL JEFFCOCK JENKINSON REED STOAKES Fingers crossed! Karen Hill Sheffield, UK
I would like to add my thanks to those of Kay to Gordon for all his work as Administrator of the list. Best wishes to you for the New Year. Enumeration Districts and parishes I am a little puzzled by 1841 census districts. I think I have found Sarah Bell widowed in Webster Yard in Spring St. in 1841 and she is living off the parish.. It appears that this is about where the current Sheffield magistrates' courts are. The summary of her on the Ancestry website gives the district as Strafforth and Tickhill (South Division) Her eldest son John was born in Bramley near Rotherham which is in the parish of Braithwell which is, according to the Wickersley website also in Strafforth and Tickhill. (Upper Division) Could she before the death of her husband which was around 1839-40 have been living in the Bramley area near Rotherham and then been living off the Parish in Spring Street or does it mean that they had left Bramley and were living in Webster Yard or somewhere in the same parish before her husband died? The Strafforth Tickhill area seems quite large and I assume there are no records for 1831 like there are for Nether Hallam. Any insights would be helpful.
