    3. Folks I wonder if anyone has this individual in their past. I have him in the 1871,1881,1891 and 1901 census. I have his birth in 1840. However I cannot find either of his marriages or his death in the GRO. In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census he is living at 307 Gleadless Road. His second "wife" was Sarah Ann Burniston, my ggrandmother. The only thing I know about his first "wife" is that her name was Martha and she died in 1873. Thanks in advance. -- Ernest Burniston Raleigh, North Carolina

    1. [SHEFF] Missing any BELK, KEY, HOLDER, or SKIDMORE?
    2. Dave
    3. Hi All: If you're at the "wot happened to XXX" question for any of the above surnames from Sheff, read on. In the course of my research about "who was the first Sheffielder (however remotely connected to my HINDE line) to come over to Rockford Illinois", I've gathered a fair piece of information about several Sheffield families, which I'm happy to pass on. Frederick SKIDMORE (1831-1873, Ecclesall Bierlow) married Sarah MILLER in Sheff in 1852. They had at least 5 children: Mary Elizabeth, married Robert MATTHEWMAN in Ecclesall Bierlow 1872 Samuel, married Sarah FIRTH in Sheffield 1878 Susannah, married Thomas STEVENSON in Ecclesall Bierlow 1880 Eliza Miller, married Walter HOLDER in Ecclesall Bierlow 1892 John Frederick, married Martha BELK in Ecclesall Bierlow 1892 and the last two of 'em came to the states. Walter & Eliza M HOLDER got off the Cunard liner 'Umbria' in New York City on 6 May 1895 and were living in Rockford by 1900, where they spent the rest of their lives. John Frederick SKIDMORE sailed from Liverpool to Montreal on the 'Ionian', landing in Montreal on 17 Aug 1906. Whether grossly seasick from the 8-day journey, just lost and confused in general, or on an extended drunk (as one friend has postulated) I know not, but it took until April 1907 for him to wander out of Kenora Ontario down to the American Consulate in Winnipeg Manitoba and declare his desire to cross over to the US, to go to his sister's place in Rockford (Eliza M HOLDER, above). John Frederick SKIDMORE's family followed shortly thereafter, leaving Liverpool on 6 July 1907 on the 'Etruria', landing at New York City on the 13th, and thence to Rockford. Martha BELK's sister, Kate Ellen, married Samuel KEY in Ecclesall Bierlow 1896. After a few years around Sheffield, they wandered down Notts way. In 1909 Samuel went to Liverpool, and sailed out of there on Sep 18th, on the 'Cedric'. He landed at NYC on the 26th, heading for his B-I-L John Skidmore's place in Rockford. The rest of the family followed in 1910, but on what looks like a very arduous (for the times) journey: They left Liverpool on the 'Haverford' on 16 February, and didn't make it into Philadelphia until March 4th - twice as long as the typical trip at the time. The two BELK gals mentioned above were daughters of Isaac BELK (1856-1921, Sheffield) and Martha BINNEY (1847-1908, Sheffield) married 1866 at St George's, Sheffield. All in all, Isaac & Martha had 9 children. The other 7 are: Emily, married Joseph Aloysius HINDE in Sheffield 1885 (They came over in 1911, Joe first, in May, the rest of the family in September) Annie Elizabeth, married William Henry ELLIS in Ecclesall Bierlow 1890 Ada, married George DEAN in Ecclesall Bierlow 1896 Samuel, married Kate THORNTON in Ecclesall Bierlow 1900 Florence, b Jul 1880 in Sheff Isaac, b 1887 in Sheff Lily, b 1888 in Sheff If you're related to any of the above, let me know, as I may well have additional information beyond what's listed here. 2. Shirley Franke
    3. Hi I am new to the list and I am researching my great uncle Thomas Hatton Coupland and family. Tom was born in Cartmel, Lancashire in 1882 to John and Eleanor (Leak) Coupland. The 1901 census shoiws him living in Shefield and is a grocer's carter. In October 1901 he married a Lucy Eveline Greaves in the parish church of Darnell, Sheffield. Lucy's father is listed on the marriage certificate as Harry Greaves (deceased) occ. Carter. A daughter Lucy was born in 1911 in Atherstone, Warwick and died in 1914 in Sheffield. Daughter Evelyn was born in 1914 in Sheffield. An entry on the LDS site submitted by a member of the LDS church shows Evelyn married a Thomas Herbert Dyson (parents Thomas Herbert Dyson and Grace Beech) on 25 Dec 1935 in Attercliffe. Evelyn passed away 15 Dec 1965 in Bakewell, Derby. Submitter did not leave name or address. If any one is connected or has information on this family would really appreciate hearing from you. Thank you Shirley Franke BC Canada

    3. Hi Hugh, I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you to thank you sooner for finding the baptisms of Charles and Ada Smith in Heeley. (Only just viewed the weekend postings now.) Anyway, it would seem that Charles was either born in the first or second quarter, as it's hard to tell as often the baptism took place some time after a birth(?). As to Ada, this is the first time that I have 'heard' of her. Perhaps, she was born in the previous year or so and was baptized due to ill health(?). She is not on the 1901 census and my mother never mentioned her. Now, I will have to 'bite the bullet' and order the certificates. Thank you for your generous help. And Thanks to John for his transcription work. Chris in Ontario MESSAGE FROM HUGH WATERHOUSE Would this be him?... 3. Hi Hugh, By pure chance, I had the 'Home Words' volumes containing the Rev Odom's transcriptions right next to me when I read this - prickly hairs on neck syndrome <LOL>. Please note that the house number is a 'typo'. The baptism details for both children are as stated in the 1895 volume, and both addresses for that entry are also as stated, but both houses are number 48. My apologies if the typo was my error. 3. On the earlier census the occupation with Bessemer Steel Factory is given as Stock Taker. It's the later 1901 census where he appears to be an Etcher - Sculptor. Maybe he preferred Etching to Stock Taking!!! Carol, It's possibly Steel Worker. I'm sure about the Worker part, and fairly certain about the 'St' at the start. I can be confident about them because of comparisons with the occupations of other people written by this enumerator. It's just the middle few letters that cause me a problem. I can't find anything close elsewhere. However, In the 1901 (answering both your queries in one email), the word is 'Sculp'. It's been added by a clerk as one of the standardised occupations. You'll note the handwriting isn't the same as the enumerator's. There's a few in the area. It's short for Sculptor, which is not an entirely accurate description, but then, it's been applied to an Artist a page or two earlier. It could be accurate there, but not if the artist was a painter. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" Every single one of us Devil Inside - INXS

    3. Could it be Sculp ? Again it's the statistician who has written this afterwards: wonder if he etched plates for artists? or something????!!!! He's working on his own account, too. On the previous page is an Artist Sculp - own account at home. Word looks similar. 3. Looks like Stock Taker Bessemer Steel Factory - the statistician looking at the figures later on added in O 21/8 as an occupation classification - have never known where to look for these! Looks like your man was a white collar worker, rather than a blue collar worker!
