    1. [SHEFF] Mahony Birth Certificate
    2. A. Treweek
    3. Hi. If you know that Joshua was definately born in Sheffield you could try the register office birth indexes for Sheffield. http://libplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/bmd/SearchMain.aspx These are being transcribed by S&DFHS and uploaded in batches...we have completed the births from 1837-1872 at the present time. What we did find in some of the earlier indexes was that the father's name had been entered in the index and not the child, that has now been corrected as far as the Sheffield Register Office indexes are concerned. But it will remain incorrect in the GRO indexes. Non registration is not unusual my grandfather born in 1860 is not registered but his two younger siblings and his two elder siblings are. 1. Re: [SHEFF] Mahony Birth Certificate
    2. Angela, Thanks so much for your answer regarding my problem. I do know that all except one were born in Sheffield and all the records that I have state that Joshua was born in Sheffield. His father was a brushmaker in Sheffield. I went straight to the site you posted and tried searching that way. I found all the Mahony siblings again (LOL), but no Joshua. Boo hoo!! I think I'm giving up on his birth certificate. Oh well, the information provided on his birth certificate would be the same as the other children anyway...no new insight. I just wanted to have a copy. Thanks again for your help. With gratitude, Terry in CT, USA **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. 1. [SHEFF] Mahony Birth Certificate
    2. Hi, I just sent to the GRO for 9 Mahony sibling birth certificates from Sheffield.(One was born in Halifax). They are the children of Joshua and Jane (Baker) Mahony. There were 13 children but many died stillborn. My direct descendant of Joshua Sr is Joshua Jr. and, lo and behold, he is the ONLY one whose Birth Index I cannot find on Ancestry.Com which would allow me to order his birth certificate. I have his birth date as 12 August 1860 from his US death certificate and the 1920 US Federal Census (just gave his age). I also have his birth date as August 1858 from various censuses in England and the US where they gave his age only. I have tried searching using MAHONEY, MAHONIE, MAHANY and a number of other possibilities. I've used wildcards using part of his first name and part of his surname. I've used his surname only. I've gone through the Birth Index original document to see if he was overlooked. I searched for his sister, Elizabeth Mahony, forever and no such luck. I searched the original documents and there she was with the birth year that I had and her correct name...no variations!! Ancestry just didn't pick her up for some reason.) Could I just be overlooking him somewhere? His father was Joshua and he was a Joshua so I don't think he had any other forename than Joshua. I put in a search for all Joshuas with a 2 year birthdate range to no avail. I then put in a search for all of England instead of just Sheffield and just Yorkshire like I had. There were two Joshua Mahonys but their birthdates were not in the ballpark. I keep thinking that, since I have everyone else's birth index in his family, his parents MUST have registered him, right? Well, maybe not. But, I still wonder if I am not finding him because his forename and surname are spelled horribly wrong or Ancestry didn't pick him up either. When should I give up? Does anyone have any suggestions on searching for his birth index in order to get a birth certificate? Thanks a bunch!! 1. Re: [SHEFF] Philadelphia Gardens, sheffield
    2. Hugh Waterhouse
    3. hello Louise, Welcome to this list! I can't find a reference to Philadelphia Gardens, but Philadelphia is certainly an area of Sheffield to the northwest of the centre and close to the river Don. It is also not far from the site of St Philip's Church. As the areas on the periphery of the town were built up there was often a period when the properties were used for gardens or allotments before the houses went up. There were places where 'Gardens' became part of the street names and later fell out of use. Looking at the Philadelphia area on the 1855 map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk (coordinates 434600 388500) you can see a patchwork of gardens and it would not surprise me if part of this area was known as Philadelphia Gardens for a time. Would you like to give us the details you have of this man so we can see if we can find any trace of him in Sheffield? Hi Philadelphia Gardens in Sheffield lies in an area called Philadelphia where the Rawson family had extensive tanneries in the C19. However there were also houses there as well. On the 1823 map it lies between the General Infirmary and the Hillsborough Barracks on the Peniston Road and later up the road to Crookes Sheffield. If you look at this site you will see the Rawsons who were quite important people who owned the Tanneries. They later became related to the Wight family of Eyam Hall through Marriage. .http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Sheffield/index.html You didn't mention a name so It was not possible to look up the family. regards JUDY ELKINGTON [W.R.Yorkshire, England] www.elkingtonfamily.com [email protected] www.one-name.org/profiles/elkington.html

    1. [SHEFF] HARTLEY
    2. The 1841 census for Sheffield shows the following listing: Name: Sarah Sampson Age: 45 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796 Gender: Female Where born: Yorkshire, England Civil Parish: Sheffield Hundred: Strafforth and Tickhill (South Division) County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Sheffield Sub-registration district: Sheffield West Household Members: Name Age Sarah Hartley 65 William Hartley 60 Thomas Holland 70 Sarah Sampson 45 Harriet Stringer 20 Jonathan Stringer 25 Samuel Stringer 11 Mo Nancy Taylor 45 There is a strong possibility that Sarah SAMPSON is Sarah CLEGG the daughter of Richard CLEGG and Elizabeth HARTLEY who were married in the Manchester Cathedral in 1793. We believe Sarah CLEGG married John SAMPSON about 1821. Can anyone shed light on this HARTLEY family? Richard CLEGG/Elizabeth HARTLEY had all their children christened at Cross Street Chapel between the years 1793-1805. Richard died in 1842. Indications are that Elizabeth HARTLEY CLEGG died between October 1833 and civil registration. Janet **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. 3. Hello, Yes it seems to be. This couple seem to fit the bill. The mystery remains around the family memory of the name Theresa Nightingale and the reality of Patricia Mary. 3. Hi all, I am new to this list and have browsed the archives. I am on the trail of PRIEST/ PREEST and alternative spellings, particularly in the Langsett area where they were yeoman farmer from the late 1300s. Is there anyone with access to the Bradfield parish registers who could check whether any of these four records contain any clue as to where the person concerned was 'of'? Finding Bilcliffe would be a miracle, but one must live in hope. 2. Richard Tetley
    3. Hi Mary, I would certainly investigate! I would also suggest that it's a good idea to look at adjacent graves. I've just been researching a friends family history. One of his ancestors died at a very young age in a mining accident at Birley, and was buried at Intake. For years, my friend has been putting flowers on the grave. When we uncovered the maiden name of his widow, my friend realised straight away, that the wife's parents (his gg-grandparents) were in the adjacent grave. All the years that he's been visiting the cemetery, he never knew their names, or that they were buried there. So now he's putting flowers on both graves! regards Richard Mary Berthold wrote: > Hi Everyone, > > Does anyone know whether people listed in the same grave in the Sheffield General Cemetery would be related?

    1. Re: [SHEFF] ENG-SHEFFIELD Digest, Vol 3, Issue 33
    2. JOHN WOOLSEY
    3. Hi Mary, Absolutely Yes, research them! A married daughter would take the surname of her husband, and hence any children from that union also. If the daughter then died (say very young and in childbirth) and the widower couldn't afford a grave, the family would most likely chip in and pay for it and reserve their own 'resting place' at the same time. The families could also be related via siblings and cousins etc, so there are many permutations of possibility here. It could be that different families who were very good friends maybe shared the cost of a grave plot, which may be harder to resolve, but I'd certainly look into any relationship possibilities. AFAIK, there were no strictly held conventions about who should and should not be buried in a plot other than any set down by a particular family. Hope this helps. Kind regards John Woolsey (Bridlington E.Yorks). [email protected] wrote: Today's Topics: 1. Family plots in General Cemetery? Charleville is some 10 hours drive west of Brisbane (my daughter lives there) There is the historical house in the town and the curator had found some papers re Nellie Blye, as she was known on stage, at the dump and then pit them up on display whereupon I found them.
