    3. James Howson was born ~1791, location ?? . His wife was called Hannah. They had 3 children, William b. 1823, Hannah b. 1825 and Sarah b. 1830, all in Sheffield. Am I correct in thinking that all the relevant birth and marriage records should be with the local parish records ? I will be visiting the Borthwick in York in 2 weeks time and would like to know which records to call up in readiness for my visit. Can anyone help please ? Cheers Frank

Hi I think you will need to go to the Sheffield Archive Office for these records. However, you would need to know what Parish they were in so that you can establish which church records you need to look up. I had a look at the 1841 census for you and I see that they lived in Lanbourne Square, Solly Street. Only Hannah is living with them in this census but I would imagine that william had left home to work. Sarah could have been with other relations or could have died. There are two possible churches for these. The first if St. Peter's church [now the Cathedral] or St. George's church. There was also a Catholic Church called St. Vincent on Solly Street, so do you know if they were Catholic. I would certainly ask about these records before you set off. The Cathedral records are not all kept at the record office and some are still in the Crypt. 2. Kay Feltham
    3. Hello Susan, Is this Warris family that of Ben Warris the 1940/50s comedian? Just idle curiosity really, I'm afraid - the auntie of his partner, Jimmy Jewel, used to live across the street from us in South View Road. I remember they kept pet monkeys loose in one of the bedrooms and a chimpanzee in a cage in their living room. It makes me weep to think of the poor, sad creature. K

    2. susan Roose
    3. Hi - I am looking for info about Thomas Warris from Sheffield. He was born about 1800 (according to the 1841 census) and married Mary Anderson from Filey on 26 Nov 1825 in Scarborough. Pigot's directory lists him as a painter in 1828 in Shales Moor and in 1841 he lived on Eldon St Sheffield West with 4 children. He must have died shortly after 1841 because his wife Mary and their children are in Philadelphia PA and his oldest daughter was married before 1855 and died in St Louis in 1860. If anyone can help out with info about Thomas Warris and his parents etc, I would really appreciate it. Thanks Sue Roose Springfield VA USA

    2. Pauline Bell
    3. Hello Sue I did a lot of research on the Sheffield Blitz as my great aunt and her 2 granddaughters who had been evacuated from Gosport died in Devonshire St. in Dec 1940. There is a civilian roll of honour which lists the civilian war dead in the Sheffield Local Studies library in Surrey St if anyone can get to see that for you. I do not live in Sheffield and am not sure when I will next go there. There is a communal grave at the cemetery on City Rd and they may have a list. Not all the names are recorded on the stones and some have been stolen as they were set into the surrounding wall. I have pictures of that grave if you would like to contact me off list. Her sister never mentioned Vera that we know of. Hi It is sometimes not possible to find people killed in the Blitz. Marples hotel was full of people when struck by the bomb and many people were never found. There is list of Civilian dead held at Sheffield Archives so perhaps you should contact them As you have had no contact with Vera could she have survived and married and would therefore have had another third surname. I am sending you a picture of Marples Hotel after the bomb hit. regards JUDY ELKINGTON [W.R.Yorkshire, England] www.elkingtonfamily.com [email protected] www.one-name.org/profiles/elkington.html

    1. [SHEFF] Sheffield Blitz - looking for Vera GREENHALGH/WILSHAW
    2. Sue
    3. I'm new to this list and hope SKS can help. Vera's brother and sister lived in Rotherham & Yorkshire respectively but are no longer with us. Apparently he said that his elder sister Vera died in the Sheffield Blitz in 1940, possibly in Maples Hotel. Her sister never mentioned Vera that we know of. I've 'googled' but cannot find any reference to Vera in the casualties listed on the internet. Apparently there is a communal grave for the casualties although she may not have been in the hotel. Any 'suspect' Vera's may be a 'hit'. If there is anyone out there who can find anything about Vera GREENHALGH I'd be very grateful. She was born in Cheshire in 1909 and disappeared after 1929/30. It is not known whether or not she married but if not she may go by the name of Vera GREENHALGH or Vera WILSHAW. After Vera's mother died in 1918 all 6 of the children were 'adopted' by family and were known as WILSHAW hence the uncertainty about Vera's surname. After knowing nothing of 5 of the 6 children only Vera is now proving elusive. Fingers crossed there's someone out there that can find Vera! Thanks for any help, Best wishes Sue/Manchester UK
