    2. Greetings to all Karen, the 1881 entry for James Roch is the only one on findmypast. There are two other entries, both for a Walter Roch born 1885 at Swansea and in 1903 crewed on the ship EMMA as a cook. The only difference between the two entries is the vessel had two different masters. Did you try ROCHE? Regards John in sunny SEQld. 1. [SHEFF] Crew Lists on Find My Past
    2. Karen
    3. Hi All, Does anyone know what the crew lists are that are on Find My Past? I've just done a search for 'James ROCH' my great-great grandfather and think that he appears in this list as the birth place and year of birth match his plus the spelling of the name ROCH is not common in Sheffield at the time. I don't currently subscribe to FMP as I've got an ancestry subscription but do check things on the site from time to time but I can't find a description of the content of this resource to see if its worth getting some credits. 1. [SHEFF] Wadsworth family businesses
    2. Ruth Willmore
    3. Hello I’m new to this list but would love some help, or pointers in the right direction. My great-great grandfather was John Wadsworth, born 1845 and married to Martha Downes, they lived in Wickersley, Rotherham and owned/ran a stone quarry as far as I can tell in Silverwood. This appears to have been handed down to his 7 sons, John William, George Harry (my great grandfather)  Leonard Downes, Alvery Middleton, Edric Harold and Cyril Frederick. As far as I can tell John William Wadsworth started a timber merchant business. George Harry Wadsworth continued to run the stone quarry and handed it on to his sons as a quarry and haulage business. The other brothers may have helped with the stone quarry business but also ran two cinemas. The Wincobank Picture Palace and the Tinsely Picture Palace. I have just discovered in the 1944 phone book a business called Wadsworth Bros electricians around the corner from the Wincobank Picture Palace and wonder if this was anything to do with my great-grandfather and his brothers. I would love to know more about any or all of these businesses, what happened to them, does anyone remember anything about them? Where can I find out more? My Grandma’s memories are now at best patchy. Many thanks to anyone that can help. Ruth ---   Ruth Willmore www.ilovefreegle.org

    1. [SHEFF] St Marie's/St Vincent's marriages 1887
    2. John Green
    3. Hi All, Would anyone be in a position to have a look at the St Marie's and/or St Vincent's marriage records for me? I'm looking for Joshua Higginbottom m Mary Ann Martin (unless she married using her dead husband's name - Holt) sometime in 1887. The date is as close as I can get from their 1911 census return, while John Holt only died 1886 so she wouldn't have been available before then. Neither GRO nor SRO seem to have any record of civil registration.... TIA John Green

    3. Hello listers. I recently received the marriage certificate for John Martin DICKINSON and Matilda GOODINSON. The date was 18 November, 1872 and the church is St. Thomas, ?Crookes? in the Parish of Sheffield, vicar Charles ?Coombe?. I would be grateful for information on the actual location of this church and an explanation of Crookes. Also John's residence was Broomhill and Matilda's Verdon Street, Spitel Hill. I would be most interested to know where in Sheffield are/were these two addresses. One of the witnesses was a Robert NEWTON, unknown to me, but this may be of interest to others. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Nancy Watson Sydney, Australia

    3. Hi Nancy, Crookes is a district of Sheffield about 2.5 km West of the city center. Verdon Street is to the North of the river Don. You can get more information by entering "Crookes, Sheffield" into Google. There is also an account of the churches of Sheffield on GENUKI, I think but I dont know if there are details of the ministers. The church has its own website that comes up on the Google serch and includes details of where it is. good luck, Peter Lee ---------------------------------------- > From: nwatson4@matra.com.au > To: eng-sheffield@rootsweb.com > Date: Thu, 15 Oct 2009 12:47:01 +1100 > Subject: [SHEFF] Dickinson marriage certificate > > Hello listers. > > I recently received the marriage certificate for John Martin DICKINSON and Matilda GOODINSON. Hi, St. Thomas's Church was the parish Church of an area [possibly once a village] Of Sheffield called Crookes. Broomhill, where I was born, is the next door area to Crookes and possibly one of the reasons they wished to be married there. Certainly Spital Hill was some distance away from either of these two areas, almost the other side of the town. It is quite likely that John Martin Dickinson worshipped at St. Thomas's Church as it was only a short journey from Broomhill, hence his preference to be married there. JUDY ELKINGTON [N. 1. [SHEFF] Help with census folio/pages please
    2. Karen
    3. Hi All, After a visit to Wakefield archives where I found the court records for my g-g-g-grandfather William ROCH (born c.1833, died 1868) when he was imprisoned for 4 months after stealing from his employer. He was sentenced to hard labour for stealing from John Bosworth CROCKER on 29th December 1852, the trial took place on 7th January 1853. I've been quite lucky as I've got a copy of the statements made by John CROCKER and the policeman Joseph Tasker. John CROCKER was a Mercer & Furrier at 58 High Street, Sheffield. William stole 15 fur boas, 100 yards of ribbon and 1 pair of fur cuffs. I've done a bit of research on Mr CROCKER and discovered using the IGI that he was born c.1828 and died in 1885, although I've not found a death record for this time. He also has entries in the 1852 White's Sheffield & District Directory. I can't find him on any census though so I wondered if anyone can tell me which piece/folio/pages cover the High Street for the 1851 & 1861 census. Unfortunately it doesn't give the area of Sheffield so I can't be more precise. I'm also interested in whether a Healey Street existed in Sheffield at that time and if so what the piece/folio/pages were for the 1851 & 1861 census. I'm currently trying to transcribe everything so I may find more info as I read the documents in detail. Look forward to hearing from you kind people out there. 3. Hi everybody Does anybody know if a list (preferably on-line) exists of the parish clerks of Sheffield Parish Church in the 18th century. I'm interested in who actually wrote the baptism records between about 1760 and 1800. I doubt if the vicar himself would have done it. 3. hello Richard, This shouldn't affect you unless your dates shift - the Local Studies Library in the main library building in *Surrey* Street (different southern county!) will be closed during the week beginning Monday November 9th. During that week they will move to a different part of the same building (still on the first floor). They don't seem to have that information on their webpages yet - I got it from a notice in the library. If you haven't seen those pages they have lots of useful things, including links to info about accommodation. http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries/archives-and-local-studies Also, you should note that Sheffield Archives is always closed on Fridays. 1. [SHEFF] Thorpe?
    2. Debby
    3. Hi, A while ago I learned of my Thorpe ancestry from Ecclesall Beirlow in Sheffield. Circa 1884 my great grandfather Edward Richard Thorpe, born in the Sep Qtr 1863 9c 214 (I Jan 1863 according to Sheffield Registry Office) to Sidney and Elizabeth (nee Palmer) Thorpe came to Queensland Australia. His grandfather was Sidney Thorpe son of Thomas and Fanny Thorpe (born 1816) and his grandmother was Mary Hobson. When I originally researched the Thorpes, a contact on line said Sidney was married to a Mary Ann Barnes. After Mary was widowed in 1857 she and her children are living with a John Hobson aged fifty (whom I believe is her brother) in 1861. Does anyone know these folk even Elizabeth (nee Palmer) daughter of Richard and Ann Palmer whom came from Stropshire to Sheffield? I would like to confirm one way or the other whether Sidney married a Mary Hobson or a Mary Ann Barnes. They resided in Garden Street and are buried in the General Cemetery along with family members. Edward Richard's son of the same name returned to England during WW1 and married his first cousin Ada Thorpe, daughter of his uncle Sidney Thorpe (the third). They returned to Australia and had no issue. Thomas and Fanny I cannot find death or burial dates for. Would love to make contact with any descendants of these folk? Regards Debby (in Melbourne)
