    3. The pit at Canklow was Rotherham Main Colliery, owned by John Brown and Co, and sunk in 1891. There was no Masbrough Colliery as such but there were various pits in the Masbrough area. The biggest of these was possibly Holmes Low Ground Colliery, on the valley floor near the Holmes (this had a relatively short life). There was also Car House Colliery, at the bottom of Car Hill, sunk in 1856, by Rhodes, Hague and Co. and taken over by John Brown in 1871.
