Hello everyone I only have one known connection with Rotherham and thought I "knew" the answer to my problem until I managed to visit the record office before Christmas. Having mulled over what I found I now am totally clueless and find myself in need of help. The story of Hannah Charlotte LOOSEMORE follows..... Born in Whitestaunton, Somerset in 1841, her parents ran the local inn. In 1849 her mother died and the 1851 census finds her living with her uncle's family on a farm in Devon. By 1861 she is living in Brinsworth with her father Joseph LOOSEMORE and her son George Harry LOOSEMORE (born 28.2.1860). Her second son James Frederick LOOSEMORE was born and died in Brinsworth in 1863 and a daughter Clara LOOSEMORE was born in Brinsworth in 1867. In no case was the father of the child named. In 1871 she lived in Brinsworth with her father and two children. On 7th February 1875 she married James LEVER, a widower, in Tinsley. Neither she nor James appears in any subsequent census and I have failed to find records of the death of either of them. Until I visited the record office I had assumed that the children were the result of a long term relationship with James and that they had married on the death of his estranged wife. However, I found that no James LEVER lived in the area in 1861 and the likely candidate lived in Kimberworth with wife and young daughter in 1871 and that he had been born in Spain. I was unable to confirm the death of his wife so I remain uncertain that I have the right man but it does seem likely. What doesn't now seem likely is that he was the father of Hannah's children. So........ what I have to do is find the father of my ancestor George Harry LOOSEMORE. A helpful lady at the record office told me that they don't have paternity orders or bastadry bonds. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would also like to track down the subsequent movements of Hannah & James - with my best guess being that they moved to Spain before 1881 although the theory is muddied by the death and burial of Clara in Rotherham in 1885 and my inability to find her or George Harry (who was certainly in the area in 1884) in 1881. Thanks to anyone who is still reading and even more thanks to anyone with any ideas. Robin from a sunny (its true) corner of South Wales
