    2. Hi List Is this virus alert genuine Joan Littlewood Barnsley ----- Original Message ----- From: RUSSELL BRIGGS To: FITZGERALD JOHN Sent: Friday, January 03, 2003 11:36 AM Subject: virus alert A virus has been passed on to us by a contact. Our address book WAS infected. Since you are in our address book, there is a chance you will find it in your computer too. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent Emails to your contacts. Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it: YOU MUST DO THIS 1. Go to Start, Find or search option. 2. in the file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. be sure you search your C: drive and all sub folders and any other drives you may have. 4. Click "find now" 5. The virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe. DO NOT OPEN IT 6. Go to Edit (on menu bar), chose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it. 7 Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then got to the Recycle Bin. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS, YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS. To do this a) open a new email message b) click the icon of the address book next to the "TO" c) highlight every name and add to "BCC" d) copy this message enter subject paste to e-mail ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    2. Hi List No, this virus alert is not genuine!!! I was caught out and deleted the file mentioned. only to find that it was part of my PC operating system, and facilitates the accessing of webpages. It is a sick hoax and has been going around for some time, causing no end of trouble. I paid £45 to a PC doctor to reinstall this file. Please ignore this despicable joke and hope you get this in time and that you haven not deleted the file in question. 3. As a last note on this subject, the message below is exactly why virus postings are a 'no-no' on the eng-rotherham list and many others. If you receive a message containing a virus, it HAS NOT come via the Rootsweb eng-rotherham facility, you are advised to contact the original sender direct if you receive emails containing suspect material.
