    1. [ROTH] OXLEY v. COPLEY and making their 'marks'
    2. --1057234835482 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello Belinda and others, Re OXLEY surname. How widespread and common is the name Oxley? When looking through 19th century baptisms and marriages for Brampton Bierlow, a number of names appeared which looked like Oxley, although the incumbent vicar wrote his O's as incomplete O, loking like a C. Likewise his p and X were very similiar. So some of the Oxley's could have been Copley and vice versa. It was made more difficult where the bride/groom could not write their own name but made their mark, so the same vicar wrote their name for them. On occassion, a vicar might say "make your mark here" when he meant write your signature, but the bride/groom just did as they were told, even if they could write their own name. I'm especially interested in trying to prove a link between Thomas and Emma OXLEY of Firth Yard, Stanley cum Wrenthorpe and my ggg-grandmother Anna Marie OXLEY of Wakefield about 1850.
