Concrete Cottages were among the earliest concrete houses yo be built in England. They were erected in the 1970s to house miners from Cortonwood Colliery and lasted until the 1960s. They had flat roofs and were also known locally as 'Little Palestine'. The cottages stood at the northern end of Brapmton Bierlow, off Knollbeck Lane, next to the boundary between Barmpton Bierlow and Wombwell. The site is now occupied by roads called Bierlow Close and Spring Drive. Rotherham Archives & Local Studies Service has some photographs of Concrete Cottages and can supply copies from old maps showing their position and layout.
