Hi there I am hoping someone may be able to help me with this one. I have made some telephone enquiries but as Firth Brown amalgamated with other Steel companies so long ago no-one can point me in the right direction as to where to find their archives. My great grandfather was killed in the steel works in May 1920. I am told he worked for Firth Brown, possibly the Cyclops works as he lived at Attercliffe on Worksop Road. The story is that a steel girder fell on him from a height, literally crushing him to death. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to start to look for a report on his death. I have tried to look for a report in the newspapers of the time but came up blank. I have looked for an obituary but nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Karen Hill SHEFFIELD, UK
The most likely place to find the archives of Firth Brown is Sheffield Archives, 52 Shoreham Street, Sheffield S1 4SP (sheffield.archives@dial.pipex.com). The most likely newspaper to have carried a report of your ggf's death would have been the Sheffield Daily Telegraph - copies at the Local Studies Library, Central Library, Surrey Street, Sheffield S1 1XZ (local.studies@dial.pipex.com) Tony Munford Rotherham England -----Original Message----- From: Karen Hill [mailto:shys07572@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 08 April 2003 11:20 To: ENG-ROTHERHAM-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ROTH] Request for help with history of Firth Browns Hi there I am hoping someone may be able to help me with this one.
