Hi all The list has gone quiet again........... So I thought a little exercise might liven things up - just to stop the fingers from seizing.... For those who are still in Rotherham, which school did you go to? What time period was this? For those who originate from Rotherham, where were you born and where are you now (town/county/country will do - no need to post your address). And for those who don't originate from Rotherham - where in the country/world are you? Any other ideas to keep the list ticking over, please post them to me @ tlh@party7.fsnet.co.uk Tracy - Listower
Hi all I live in Scunthorpe Lincolnshire, England and I am interested in the Wentworth area because my paternal grandfather, Algernon Smith, was born there, and his siblings too - also his father, Joseph Smith and his wife Emily Dobson (whose father, Henry Dobson, was born in Kimberworth, according to the census records. I have yet to find a record of the Marriage of Joseph to Emily. Her first child was born to her as a single woman, but he was known as Harry Dobson Smith and was on the 1881 census with the rest of the family. If anyone has any further information, I would be interested to hear from them. Hi everybody Like Pat I also have an interest in Smith's in Wentworth, so far we have not been able to make a connection. Mine is James Smith, who was a tailor in the village, born 1817 and married to Sarah Addy in 1840, they had a number of children including Joe Smith. He married Eliza Alice Lineham who lived in Wath upon Dearne. Her father was Elijah Lineham, who was, for a number of years the census enumerator for the Wath No. 1 district. Joe and Eliza Alice had a number of children who were born in Wath, Gorton Lancs. Oxford and Leicester. Joe was a chemist and druggist and moved around. Leicester is were I come in, Joe and Eliza Alice were my ggrandparents, I was born in Leicester but migrated to Sydney Australia in 1966 which is were I live now. G'day Tracy and listers, Although not born and bred in Rotherham my family have had a long association with the area. My ggf, John PAYLING an ag lab, from Fulbeck in Lincolnshire migrated northwards along with many others to seek work in the mining and steelworking industry in and around Rawmarsh. The 1881 census has him at age 51 living at Oak Terrace near Green Lane Farm Rawmarsh. (I am still trying to determine when these houses were demolished and if any photographs exist.) Seemingly he became a coal miner along with a number of his 15 children one of whom was my gf Quinn PAYLING. Unfortunately both ggm Sarah nee COBB from Clarborough in Nottinghamshire (53yrs) and ggf John (56 yrs) both died of Bronchopneumonia when Quinn was only 9 years old and he was taken in by an aunt and uncle. As his uncle was a mine manager, living at Beechwood House, Sandhill Lane, it appeared inevitable that Quinn (and his brothers) would also became a coal miner. He did and eventually married and the 1901 census has him living at 164 Clay Pit Lane, Rawmarsh (or is it Swinton?) My father was born at this address. He joined the army and after a long period overseas eventually moved to Sheffield where I spent most of childhood. However both my mother and father worked in Rotherham for many years. My mum was a health visitor in Rotherham and my father worked in the laboratory at Doncaster Gate Hospital. On retirement they moved to Kimberworth and stayed. Although my schooling was all based in Sheffield I eventually joined Steel Peech and Tozer and spent over 9 memorable and enjoyable years there before moving on. I also met my wife Marie there, and surprise surprise she was a Rawmarsh girl and her father was a coal miner. We lived in Rotherham for a number of years and after moving around with my job emigrated to Australia in 1980. Thanks to the power of the www and lists like this I have found a 2nd cousin and my wife has made contact with her best friends when she was at Rosehill school all too many yeras ago!! I would be happy to hear from any one who has any interest in any of the above. Best wishes from Melbourne, Australia Duncan Payling
Hi: I live in Wisconsin in the States. My gg-grandparents, John Didsbury and Harriet Boomer, were born in Rotherham in the early 1800s. Their three children, Mary Ann, John and Harriet, were born in Rotherham and lived at Spah House in Treeton. They left for Canada in 1840, but the rest of the family stayed in Rotherham and Treeton.
