Hello Tracy and everyone, I'm from Rotherham and still live here, overlooking the 14th century Manorial Barn in the village of Whiston. Whiston was mentioned in the Domesday Book but has been inhabited since the Stone Age. I went to Rotherham High School from 1958 to 1964. Some old-established companies I have worked for in the Rotherham area include Beatson Clark Glassworks, Canning Town Glass, Bestobell Foundry, Guest & Chrimes Foundry, and North Central Finance. We have a long association with the Glass Industry, from the DUGDALES in Sunderland around 1850, through the TAYLORS around 1890, down to my brother who worked in the Industry all his life, and myself for a few years. My family interests are:- BAKER and RENTON from Barwick in Elmet and Leeds, DUGDALE from Sunderland, York and Rotherham, ASHMORE and ATKINSON from Hooton Levitt and Ecclesfield, TAYLOR from Belper, Derbyshire and Rotherham, PATCHING or PETCHING originally from Brighton. Great-grandpa PATCHING had children in Barrow in Furness - Lancs, Radcliffe - Lancs, Horsted Keynes - Sussex, Hull - Yorks, Grays - Essex and Horsey Island -Southampton, then his wife died and he remarried and got 6 stepchildren! The PATCHINGs moved to Bramley and Wickersley after grandfather came here to help sink Thurcroft Colliery. Ruth - my mother went to Wickersley School from 1913-1920, her name was MAY PATCHING. She remembers lots of WADSWORTHS, but can't remember BESSIE unfortunately. She says some WADSWORTHS ran a cinema in Attercliffe, Sheffield. If you can provide more details on the family I'm sure she will know them - she is 95 but has an excellent memory! Hello Helen Hello Karen, My Grandma's uncles ran two cinemas, Tinsley and Wincobank picture palaces. I'd love to find out more about that. Grandma remembers the decision being taken to introduce talking pictures. Her sisters, Kathleen and Irene worked in the ticket office, and at least one of her brothers married an usherette! Interestingly I also have connections in Belper, my Dads family (HOPKINSON, BOWLER, BATTERLEY) were there for from at least 1800, and my maternal Grandfathers (TOMLINSON, HUNT) family also came from Belper.
