    3. Hi Donna Depending on where you are in the world or UK, maybe you ought to try to get an old map of Treeton or Rotherham to see if Howarth Hall or Spa House are marked on it. I've done a search on the internet but Spa(r) House doesn't come up - the only place similar to Hawarth Hall is Howarth House on Brinsworth Lane, Brinsworth which is now a care home. I'm assuming you've spoken to relatives about your ancestors - can they help you anymore on locating these two places? Best wishes Tracy Listowner Worksop, Notts (born Rotherham) ----- Original Message ----- From: 'Tis Herself To: ENG-ROTHERHAM-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, January 05, 2003 10:31 PM Subject: [ROTH] ROTHERHAM/TREETON I am wondering if anyone has ever heard of Howarth Hall in Rotherham? 3. My relatives are long gone but in our family tree Spa House was mentioned in Treeton and also I believe their coach driver wrote a book about them as a researcher years ago sent me a copy of some of the pages taken from the book. I was told that the Boomer daughters (3) who weren't married were allowed to stay there until they died. I do have the death certificate for Mary Hall Boomer, who died on Christmas day in 1839 at Haworth Hall, her family home, in Rotherham. I was just wondering if these places were still around. Thank you so much for your reply! Donna

    3. I am looking for any information on the Didsbury/Boomer families. My gg-grandfather, John Didsbury, was married in 1832 to Harriott Boomer. Harriott's parents were Benjamin Boomer and Mary Hall and they lived at a place called Hawarth (Howarth) Hall. When John married Harriott, they lived at a place called Spa (Spar) House in Treeton, and three of Harriott's sisters, who were unmarried, lived there until they died (I believe the last one died in 1885). Thomas Didsbury, John's brother, stayed on in Rotherham; they had both inherited quite a bit of land from Richard Didsbury, their uncle, who owned quite a bit of property in Rotherham, Sheffield and surrounding towns. John went to Canada with his family, where Harriott died 12 yrs later. Thomas stayed in Rotherham and I believe he was married to a Margaret Oxley. John and Thomas had a sister, Mary, who married a Hirst or Hurst. Donna

    3. Hello Robin, Just one idea when searching for James LEVER. My maiden name is LEVERS and through research I've found that all the following can be used for LEVERS - LEVER, LEAVER, LEIVER, LEAVERS, LEIVERS, LEIVARS etc Its a very common name in Nottinghamshire. Also, on the 1881 census, I have one family I could not find - then I thought about mistranscriptions and found them under the name SEVERS.The "L" was obviously misjudged as an "S". Also, try SEWERS. (There is absolutely no doubt that they are my LEVERS family!! Same names, ages, birthplaces, inlaws, address etc etc) I've also found a BARKER family mistranscribed on the 1881 census as BODEN - but yet again, no doubt at all - I even looked at the original census, and yes they were BARKERs!! Just an idea - hope you find your family!! Best Wishes Valerie Chesterfield

    3. Hello everyone I only have one known connection with Rotherham and thought I "knew" the answer to my problem until I managed to visit the record office before Christmas. Having mulled over what I found I now am totally clueless and find myself in need of help. The story of Hannah Charlotte LOOSEMORE follows..... Born in Whitestaunton, Somerset in 1841, her parents ran the local inn. In 1849 her mother died and the 1851 census finds her living with her uncle's family on a farm in Devon. By 1861 she is living in Brinsworth with her father Joseph LOOSEMORE and her son George Harry LOOSEMORE (born 28.2.1860). Her second son James Frederick LOOSEMORE was born and died in Brinsworth in 1863 and a daughter Clara LOOSEMORE was born in Brinsworth in 1867. In no case was the father of the child named. In 1871 she lived in Brinsworth with her father and two children. On 7th February 1875 she married James LEVER, a widower, in Tinsley. Neither she nor James appears in any subsequent census and I have failed to find records of the death of either of them. Until I visited the record office I had assumed that the children were the result of a long term relationship with James and that they had married on the death of his estranged wife. However, I found that no James LEVER lived in the area in 1861 and the likely candidate lived in Kimberworth with wife and young daughter in 1871 and that he had been born in Spain. I was unable to confirm the death of his wife so I remain uncertain that I have the right man but it does seem likely. What doesn't now seem likely is that he was the father of Hannah's children. So........ what I have to do is find the father of my ancestor George Harry LOOSEMORE. A helpful lady at the record office told me that they don't have paternity orders or bastadry bonds. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would also like to track down the subsequent movements of Hannah & James - with my best guess being that they moved to Spain before 1881 although the theory is muddied by the death and burial of Clara in Rotherham in 1885 and my inability to find her or George Harry (who was certainly in the area in 1884) in 1881. Thanks to anyone who is still reading and even more thanks to anyone with any ideas. Robin from a sunny (its true) corner of South Wales
