    3. Hi Taking up the list owners invitation to post my details to this list for the first time. I have an interest in LINEHAM family in Wath upon Dearne from 1860's to present. The SMITH family in Wentworth, starting with William Smith who married Elizabeth West on 10 Dec 1810. By marriage to these families are also the ADDY and CUSWORTH. I see there are already some people on the list who have sent me info on the Smith's. I already have quite a bit of info on the Lineham's but the Smith family, it is not easy! Bye for now Graham Grant Sydney Australia Researching Grant - Wigston Magna and Leicester 1780 to present. Follow - Stafford Staffordshire 1790 to present Gra(i)nger - Oadby Leicestershire, Cold Ashby and Great Oxendon Northants. Flatters - Horncastle area Lincs Smith - Wentworth Yorks Lineham - Newark, Wath upon Dearne. Bowley - Sheepshed Leicestershire

    3. Hi all Just to officially welcome newcomers to ENG-ROTHERHAM and to say that we now have 83 subscribers to the list. If you haven't posted to the list yet, please do - if you wish, you can post a brief introduction about yourself (optional) and who/what you are researching - and whatever else you'd like to share (so long as it's to do with family history/genealogy or related to Rotherham history). Please encourage new members to ENG-ROTHERHAM, the more people we can tempt into subscribing, the more chance we all have of making a connection with someone who perhaps is searching the same family name. The list is still rather quiet, so existing members might like to take the opportunity of reposting their interests so that newcomers are aware of who's searching for who/what. and don't forget these most helpful websites: ROTHERHAM FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY http://www.rotherhamfhs.f9.co.uk/ FREE BMD (a really useful site for tracing information on births/marriages/deaths already entered into the database - more information is uploaded monthly) http://freebmd.rootsweb.com Eng-Yorkshire Website: http://www.geocities.com/yshireuk/index.html Which, incidentally, is my website - and gives information particularly for those who are new to family history/genealogy. - and I'm sure there are many more which you can share with everyone in your postings. Thanks for supporting ENG-ROTHERHAM! Best wishes Tracy Listowner (email: tlh@party7.fsnet.co.uk)

    1. [ROTH] Another ROTHERHAM website
    2. tlh
    3. Hi all I picked this website up from another list during an ongoing conversation about old ROTHERHAM. Thought it might be of interest. http://www.geocities.com/rotherhamunoff/ It might also instigate some conversation on the list about old Rotherham and what it's like today, either from those further afield or even from those still not far away from ROTHERHAM itself. Please feel free to share any memories you have of Rotherham - this is the place to do it. I would also appreciate anyone letting me know (offlist via tlh@party7.fsnet.co.uk) if they are receiving replies to postings privately as we don't seem to be much discussion coming through. Best wishes Tracy Listowner

    1. [ROTH] HINCHLIFFE marriages at Rotherham
    2. Satima Flavell Neist
    3. Copied from the HINCHLIFFE-UK list, by permission of the sender:- While doing research at the Santa Monica, CA, FHC I ran across a film in a drawer which didn't have the films I was really looking for. Those were parish registers for Yorkshire, and this one (which I seem to have forgotten to jot down the film number for!) listed marriages at Rotherham from 1540 to 1837. Among them were the following: Richard Hinchliffe & Anne Swallow 29 Aug 1642 Richard Hinchcliffe & Anne Austwicke 27 May 1647 Thomas Hinchcliffe & Eliz. Walker 18 Aug 1646 Thomas Hinchliffe & Isabel Letchforth 2 Feb 1659/60 Stephen Hinchliffe & Eliz. Rodes 24 Jul 1661 Brian Hinchliffe & Eliz. Hirst 31 (sic) Nov. 1660 Godfrey Hinchliffe & Ellen Morton (signs to 'Newton') w. 25 Nov 1762 Thomas Collidge (signs to 'Collidg) & Sarah Hinchliff 13 Ap 1789 not entered in B.B. (Banns books from 11 Jan 1789 - 31 Sep 1797) James Hinchcliff & Hannah Stanisforth 15 Dec 1793 I hope this may prove helpful to some of the posters here. The film was a fascinating read in itself, because of all the interesting names, some of which were repeated many times, some appearing only once or twice. 1. [ROTH] GREAVES - BRAMMER
    2. Sue Renkert
    3. My great-grandfather, Henry GREAVES, was born 1835 in Rotherham. The following christenings were Henry and his siblings, children of Benjamin GREAVES and Mary BRAMMER, who were married 2-28-1814 in Rotherham: Ann 1814 William 1818 Benjamin 1819 Jonas 1824 Annis 1827 Henry 1832 Henry 1835 The above information is from the LDS/IGI. Can anyone tell me how to go about locating the marriage record of Benjamin and Mary and eventually obtaining a copy of the certificate? Also according to the IGI, Benjamin Greaves was born about 1789 in Rotherham and Mary Brammer was born about 1793. There are a lot of BRAMMER entries in the IGI, but I find no record of a Mary being born in 1793. Is there another place to look for this information? Also, a Benjamin Greaves, son of Jonas Greaves and Barbara, was christened 3-7-1790. My Benjamin had a son named Jonas. This looks like a likely match. If anyone can tell me where to search for these records, or for additional information, I would very much appreciate it! Thank you very much! Sue Renkert Fairbanks, Alaska, USA

    1. [ROTH] My interest GREAVES
    2. Posting my interest, *George Greaves G eorge married Mary Wing a thirty one year old spinster 8th October 1799 in Ecclesfield. Mary the daughter of Thomas and Sarah wing was baptised 22nd Oct 1768 at Tankersley, most probably St Peters Church. The Children of George Greaves I found four children baptised to George and Mary with a possible fifth. George and Mary were living at Tankersley Lane when they were baptising four of their children at St Peters church Tankersley. The baptism register reads: Greaves Richard Greaves Joseph twin children of George and Mary of Tankersley Lane Feb 28 1802. Greaves Mary daughter of George and Mary of Tankersley Lane Oct 7 1804. Greaves William son of George and Mary of Tankersley Feb 22 1807. I found a daughter Elizabeth, baptised to George and Mary at Rotherham, born 5th January 1808 and baptised 7th January 1808. I believe she could be their child but I have not been able to defiantly confirm this yet. George moved his family from Tankersley at some stage after the baptism of their fourth child William; most probably work being the reason. We next encounter George's family living at South Hole, Kimberworth, Rotherham where they appear on the 1841 census. 3. Hello everyone There have been quite a few new subscriptions to the Eng-Rotherham list over the past couple of weeks, so I would just like to say 'Welcome to you all'. The list does tend to go rather quiet sometimes so if you don't receive any postings for a couple of days, don't worry, they will come through eventually. To all existing members, if you can help anyone with their queries, even if it only means pointing them in the right direction (and not causing you any more work than a few taps on the keyboard), please do. We need to keep this list ticking over and offering our support to everyone who is in need of a little help to find some answers, sometimes the smallest piece of information can mean a lot when you've nowhere else to go (and we all know how that feels, don't we!). Many thanks Tracy - Listowner Eng-Rotherham

    3. Hi Pat The only information that is given about the family is what actually appears on the census return, Name, Age, Occupation, Place of birth etc. Sorry if this is not what you wanted/needed but as I saw the family there thought it would be of use to you. Did you find the census for this area on the website? If you follow the links to RG12/3855 and search for the name using the find tool the family listed show up, there are also a couple more Speight families. There are 3 pages to search, scroll to the bottom of each page and there is a link for the next page.
