I certainly remember Clifton Hall - originally built as a drill hall for the local volunteer batallion of the York and Lancaster Regt. I amm afraid that the building was demolished c1988 and there is now a car park on the site. The most likely place to find the archives of Firth Brown is Sheffield Archives, 52 Shoreham Street, Sheffield S1 4SP (sheffield.archives@dial.pipex.com). The most likely newspaper to have carried a report of your ggf's death would have been the Sheffield Daily Telegraph - copies at the Local Studies Library, Central Library, Surrey Street, Sheffield S1 1XZ (local.studies@dial.pipex.com) Tony Munford Rotherham England -----Original Message----- From: Karen Hill [mailto:shys07572@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 08 April 2003 11:20 To: ENG-ROTHERHAM-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ROTH] Request for help with history of Firth Browns Hi there I am hoping someone may be able to help me with this one. I have made some telephone enquiries but as Firth Brown amalgamated with other Steel companies so long ago no-one can point me in the right direction as to where to find their archives. My great grandfather was killed in the steel works in May 1920. I am told he worked for Firth Brown, possibly the Cyclops works as he lived at Attercliffe on Worksop Road. The story is that a steel girder fell on him from a height, literally crushing him to death. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to start to look for a report on his death. I am researching the above surnames, mostly around Wickersley. Does anyone have any connections? Does anyone have access to census returns for the area? I am trying to find where Martha GRAYSON, who married John Middleton DOWNES was born? She died in 1880, but I would exact to find her on the 1841, 51, 61, and 71 census, all in Wickersley, she married in 1834 so would have been shown on the census as Martha DOWNES. Their children were: Elizabeth DOWNES b. 1834 Henry John Grayson DOWNES b. 1835 d. 1846 William DOWNES b. 1839 Mary Ann DOWNES b. 1841 Martha DOWNES b. 1842 Jane DOWNES b. 1844 John Middleton DOWNES b. 1849 Fanny DOWNES b. 1851 Sarah Ellen DOWNES b. 1852 Walter DOWNES b. 1855 Alice DOWNES b. 1858 Hoping someone can help? Hello Tracy. Thanks for the update on Hellaby Hall, at one time the tennants of the Hall went by the name of Carnelly, they worked the farm belonging to the property, On sunday mornings I would go from Hellaby all round Maltby with their son on a Horse and Cart selling milk. They were the good old days Tracy. Thanks again Tracy. Regards to you & the Listers. Stan in Oz.
Just to carry on Tony's update on Hellaby Hall, they've now started work on another extension consisting of 90 more bedrooms! They have their own health club, have recently extended the gym, and work starts soon on extending the changing rooms - it's all go at Hellaby Hall. So what's the history of the place exactly? Hi Listers, Posting our interests, any connections *George Greaves G eorge married Mary Wing a thirty one year old spinster 8th October 1799 in Ecclesfield. Mary the daughter of Thomas and Sarah wing was baptised 22nd Oct 1768 at Tankersley, most probably St Peters Church. The Children of George Greaves I found four children baptised to George and Mary . They were living at Tankersley Lane when they were baptising four of their children at St Peters church Tankersley. The baptism register reads: Greaves Richard Greaves Joseph twin children of George and Mary of Tankersley Lane Feb 28 1802. Greaves Mary daughter of George and Mary of Tankersley Lane Oct 7 1804. Greaves William son of George and Mary of Tankersley Feb 22 1807. George moved his family from Tankersley at some stage after the baptism of their fourth child William; most probably work being the reason. We next encounter George's family living at South Hole, Kimberworth, Rotherham where they appear on the 1841 census. Hi to the Listers, This is my first posting to the list, My name is Stan Bower, Hence my interest in Bower Genealogy. I originated from Maltby and later Hellaby, I have good memories of my life in the area, Back in 1942 as a 15 year old I worked at Steel Peech & Tozers, then as a taxi driver at Helliwells in Norfolk St I think it was, after that at E & EJ Shaw's, a transport haulage firm later to become British Road Services. Eventually my wife and I lived in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and then back in Australia again. I have fond childhood memories of playing in Hellaby Hall, where my Grandfather at the age of 16 along with his younger brother worked as servants back in 1888. Sorry if I have bored anyone with my rambling Regards to the Listers Stan in Oz
Please can anyone help me to trace the death of Ann STRAFFORD between 1810 and 1813? She was the wife of John STRAFFORD, and would be in her late 20s or early 30s. At least until 1807 she was living in SCROOBY, Notts, and I have found the (later) deaths of her parents there, but not her death. I wondered if she had returned to, or been buried in, the Consiborough area where she was born, or to Wath upon Dearne where she married. I have drawn a complete blank, so any help would be much appreciated. Margaret currently in San Francisco
Hi Stan You may be interested to know that Hellaby Hall, after many years in derelict condition, is now a luxury hotel. All the buildings on Norfolk Street have gone and been replaced with Council offices and the vast melting shop at Steel, Peech and Tozer is now the Magna science adventure park/museum.
