The pit at Canklow was Rotherham Main Colliery, owned by John Brown and Co, and sunk in 1891. There was no Masbrough Colliery as such but there were various pits in the Masbrough area. The biggest of these was possibly Holmes Low Ground Colliery, on the valley floor near the Holmes (this had a relatively short life). There was also Car House Colliery, at the bottom of Car Hill, sunk in 1856, by Rhodes, Hague and Co. and taken over by John Brown in 1871. For anyone who may be interested, I picked this link up from another list. Go towards the bottom of the page to 'Yorkshire, west riding', then click on 'Rotherham' http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ Today, from Alma Road, you can only see the middle section of the first picture - I hadn't realised how much of it was still standing. My gt-gt-grandfather lived a stone's throw from Alma Road, on Oil Mill Fold / Alma Place back in 1876 - but I haven't managed to find a birth or death for him yet (in 2 years of searching). For info, his name was George MULLINS. Best wishes Tracy Listowner

Hi Malcolm Welcome to the list. To subscribe to the Sheffield list, do the same as you did to join Eng-Rotherham BUT substitute ENG-ROTHERHAM for ENG-SHEFFIELD. Glad to see someone with plenty of information for others to go on - so come on everyone - whilst you're waiting for info on your own research, see if you can dig a little something out for Malcolm. And of course, if anyone has ANY information about anyone with the surname MULLINS (no matter what it may be: birth, marriage, death, census info (not 1881) etc.) please let me know. Thanks Tracy - Listowner Eng-Rotherham ----- Original Message ----- From: carrma To: ENG-ROTHERHAM-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, May 08, 2003 7:49 AM Subject: [ROTH] (ROTH) Carr, Kay, Casson, Wainwright, Shaw, Wood, Todd & (Park?) Hi, it's great to see so many people getting help through this group. So I am resubmitting my interests, seeing there are so many new members now. I would like to also submit this to the SHEFFIELD Discussion Group, how do I go about this please? My name is Malcolm Arnold Carr - I was born in Christchurch, New Zealand on 17 December 1945. After living in Sydney, Australia for 20 years, I have recently returned to live in Christchurch, New Zealand. I have been trying to trace my Great Grandfather, William CARR (son of James Carr), who worked as an engine fitter for the Yorkshire Engine Company. He married Emma KAY (born Grenoside or Shire Green? to George Kay & Ann CASSON) on 11th April 1868 at St Thomas's Church, Kimberworth, when he was 32. They had 3 children, Sarah Ellen, James (my Grandfather, born 3rd January 1871 at Jenkin Road, Brightside, educated at Brightside Boarding School) & William (lived for only 3 months). He died on the 17th May 1874 at Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, from pneumonia aged 38 years. The family was living at High St, Brightside Bierlow in the 1871 Census. His widow Emma remarried on February 1877 to George Samuel WAINWRIGHT - this family was living at 25 Adsett St, Brightside Bierlow in the 1881 Census (children: [Wainwright] Alfred 17, Joshua 15, George S. 14 & Emma J. 11; [Carr] Sarah E. 11 & James 10). Unfortunately, I have been unable to trace William Carr's birth - I have tried St. Catherine's House Index & the IGI, but couldn't find anything which made any sense. Not knowing his mothers name hasn't helped either. His son, another James Carr, emigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1899, returning to England briefly in 1904 to see a specialist & to marry Annie Sarah SHAW (born October 31 1874 at Windhill, Shipley). I have tried to set out the above information in a sort of summary format below if it makes any clearer, together with my ancester's & their siblings salient details: James CARR (my ggg grandfather) of Openshaw (Manchester) & Sheffield, died about 1880, m. ? Hi Pete and Ruth, Thank you, Pete, for the info on the Patchings. It's interesting that the burial index differs by a year on age on all 3 burials from what is on the gravestone. Thomas was 54 (which I know is correct), Gladys is shown as 19 and Henry 23 years. Thank you very much for your help. Hello Ruth, I'm sorry I can't help with your enquiry about the WADSWORTH grave, but wonder if you will be kind enough (when you have time) to look on the St Albans index for my grandfather, Thomas Patching, who was buried there in 1933, along with his son Henry age 23 and daughter Gladys age 19. I live in the area so have seen the grave, but thought there might be more information in the burial index than I have. It's a long shot, I know, and I hope you don't mind. In return, my mother, born in 1908, is still alive and lived most of her life in Wickersley and Bramley, so if you need any "first hand information" of a more recent nature, let me know and I'll ask her. Hello all I wonder if you can help me. My ancestor Christopher Thomas WADSWORTH died 30 Apr 1870 (I hadn't noticed the date until I typed it!). His gravestone is in Wickersley, St Albans Churchyard: Sacred / to the memory of / John son of Christopher Thomas / of Elizabeth WADSWORTH / who departed this life / July 17th 1850 aged 9 months / This lovely bud so young and fair / Called hence in early doom / Just came to show how sweet a flower / In paradise would bloom / Also of the above named Elizabeth WADSWORTH / who died / July 1st 1859 aged 44 years / Also of the said Christopher WADSWORTH / who died April 30th 1870 aged 59 years. I have just bought the burial index from Rotherham family history society for St Albans and although both infant John and Elizabeth WADSWORTH appear on the burial index Christopher Thomas WADSWORTH doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be? Of course if you would like a look up on the St Albans Wickersley Burial index please let me know too. Its 1813 to 1966.
