    3. Dear John, I'm afraid the information is very sketchy. The only reference we have to the TAYLOR surname is from a family tree typed up many years ago by an unknown person, where my g grandmother appears to have a sister, Mary TAYLOR, which we have taken as evidence that she married a Mr TAYLOR (christian name unknown). I suppose I should see if I can find their marriage in the St Catherine House Index. Below are the full details of Mary's family that we know of so far: George KAY (my gg granfather), 23 son of ? KAY & ??, m. Ann CASSON, 23 on December 25 1846 by Banns in the Parish of Sheffield (NOTE: this family was living at Low Winkobank at the time of the 1881 Census, Ann's widowed mother Ann CASSON aged 90 & blind was living with them then). Emma KAY (my g grandmother b. Nov 16 1848 Grenoside or Shire Green?, Yorkshire, d. Nov 21 1925 Methven, New Zealand) m. William CARR Ann KAY, b. bet. 1857-58 at Ecclesfield, warehouse assistant (1881 Census), m. ? WHITBREAD (I think ?) Mary KAY, b. ? at ?, m. ? TAYLOR (I think ?) Sorry, the information is so vague on the TAYLOR side, and so may not be much use to you. Will let you know if ever I come up with anything more detailed. Kind regards Malcolm Carr (Christchurch, New Zealand)

    1. [ROTH] FROST & Mary YEARDLEY at Wentworth
    2. Graham Frost
    3. Pat (and other Listers) You asked if any of the FROST and YEARDLEY names married a SMITH of Wentworth, but I'm afraid that my so far very incomplete research hasn't come up with any. I think I have identified the siblings of my FROST ancestors, but there are only two marriages of which I am aware: Emma FROST b. 1844 (daur. of Joseph FROST & Mary YEARDLEY) married Henry WALLER. On the 1891 and 1901 censuses they are shown living at Spittle/Spittall Houses, Wentworth. My grandfather Fred FROST and his elder brother William Joseph FROST married two sisters from Hamilton, Lanarkshire - Jane and Mary TWADDLE. My father's cousin tells me that they met at a conference of the Brethren Church in Carlisle. Both brothers were miners in the Wentworth area in 1891. Later William kept the post office and greengrocers in Thorpe Hesley, and my grandfather eventually (I don't know when) became a nurseryman at Ackworth, Pontefract. He had left the Brethren Church in the early 1900s after having spent some time as a missionary in Barbados. This hasn't been any help for you with the SMITH name, but I would be interested if anyone on the list has any information on the Brethren Church on the Rotherham area. Thanks for all the contributions which have made me very keen to spend some time exploring around Wentworth - the Wentworth website is very informative. Regards to all Graham Frost Bedford

    2. Thanks Jim for this lovely Wentworth village site, of which I was unaware! I hope it will help others too to know what a lovely village it is. My Smith family seem to have come from Tankersley, when John Smith married Ann Balmforth in 1823 and are listed on the 1841 census and 1851 census, which reveals he was born in 1797 .John died in 1857 - and Ann is listed as a Widow and a launderess on subsequent census records until her death. My great grandfather, one of John's sons, Joseph, lived at Barrow Field Gate, but John and Ann lived at Spitalhouses. I have visited Wentworth on numerous occasions in recent years, as my second cousin still lives in the cottage in the main street where my great grandfather and family went to live about 1891. 2. Hello I have often seen the names you are researching on the records I am researching at Rotherham archives, which are at Rotherham library - well worth a visit, but you have to book in advance to get on a film reader. If you go into the search engine Google and type in Rotherham Family History Society, you should get onto the site where there are some photos of Wentworth Woodhouse. It is supposed to be the largest stately home in England with 365 rooms. I wonder if any of your Frosts and Yeardleys married any Smiths of Wentworth, as my great grandfather was one of a large family. He was Joseph Smith, baptised in 1832 in Wentworth and married Emily Dobson, but I have as yet not located their marriage. I still have a second cousin, who shares my great grandfather, still living in the family home, which has been their home since about 1891. Of course, the house is owned by the Wentworth Park Trust. It is a lovely unspoiled village as no modern development has been allowed. 2. Graham- For pictures of Wentworth, take a look at http://www.wentworthvillage.net/index.shtml As well as pictures, this also has an interesting family tree of the Fitzwilliam family. For older pictures, I can commend (not just because it includes photographs of my grandfather and great-grandfather!) the excellent book "The Big House and The Little Village" by Roy Young, published by Wentworth Garden Centre in March 2000. I'm not sure if Hood Hill Lodge still exists as it is some years since I was in Wentworth. It was situated at the end of what was called 'The Coach Road' which ran from Hague Lane in Wentworth to the Sheffield - Leeds turnpike (now the B6135) at Hood Hill. I believe that the lodge was used by the NCB Opencast Executive at some stage. The area around the Coach Road and Spitalhouses was taken over by them in the 1940's and 1950's and accomodated the screening plant for coal taken from the opencast mines in Wentworth Park and around the village. Spitalhouses was a hamlet fairly remote from Wentworth village itself. The houses were Fitzwilliam houses and hence for workers, or retired workers from the Fitzwilliam Estate. He married Mary Jane WALKER (2nd wife) 5 Sept 1881 at Parish of Eastwood, Rotherham. Mary Jane (b. abt 1850) was the dau of Robert Turner WALKER and Sarah. >From this marriage were born: Henry Darnley 1884 (Dec qtr) Gertrude Sybil 24 Jan 1887 (my gmother) Arthur Cecil 1890 (Sept qtr) His first marriage was to Jane BRAMHAM and I know of 3 children: Kate b. 1866 (June qtr) George b. 3 Oct 1872 (have birth cert) William b. abt 1875 If SKS has access to 1871 or earlier census could they check whether there were any children born before 1866? I have info from 1881 & 1891 census. Could someone shed some light on an apparent duplication of these children in 1881 census: the children are listed as living with their father at Doncaster Gate 1 Court 3 where George is called "John". They are also listed as niece/nephew living with Jane Hollingshead at 18 Eastwood Lane??!! In 1891 Robert & Sarah WALKER were living with their dau and son-in-law. I have the following as children of Joseph and Mary FROST with birth dates: Sarah abt. 1838 Frederick 1840 Emma 1844 Arthur (my G Grandfather) 26 May 1847. His birth certificate has mother's name as "Mary FROST formerly YEARDLEY" Frank 1849 Some of my information on the FROST name has come from censuses, but I haven't seen all of the censuses yet, and haven't looked for Mary YEARDLEY there yet. Also I don't have a record of when Mary YEARDLEY died. The death certificate for Joseph shows that he died at Spital Houses, Wentworth 1 Sep 1889 age 79. Occupation: gardener. He may well have worked on the Wentworth Woodhouse estate as my G Grandfather was born at Hoodhill Lodge, Wentworth. Can anyone tell me where I might find records and photographs from Wentworth Woodhouse? and does Hoodhill (or Hood Hill) Lodge still exist? Graham Bedford

    2. I would also be interested to know if there are any records of Wentworth Woodhouse. If anybody knows could they please reply to the list. My G G Grandfather, John Staceywas a woodman in Wentworth and I have wondered if he could have been employed at Wentworth Woodhouse.
