I am resubmitting my interests for new subscribers. My name is Malcolm Arnold Carr - I was born in Christchurch, New Zealand on 17 December 1945. At present I am living in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, but will be returning to live in New Zealand early in the New Year. I have been trying to trace my Great Grandfather, William CARR (son of James Carr), who worked as an engine fitter for the Yorkshire Engine Company. He married Emma KAY (born Grenoside or Shire Green? to George Kay & Ann CASSON) on 11th April 1868 at St Thomas's Church, Kimberworth, when he was 32. They had 3 children, Sarah Ellen, James (my Grandfather, born 3rd January 1871 at Jenkin Road, Brightside) & William (lived for only 3 months). He died on the 17th May 1874 at Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, from pneumonia aged 38 years. The family was living at High St, Brightside Bierlow in the 1871 Census. His widow Emma remarried on February 1877 to George Samuel WAINWRIGHT - this family was living at 25 Adsett St, Brightside Bierlow in the 1881 Census (children: [Wainwright] Alfred 17, Joshua 15, George S. 14 & Emma J. 11; [Carr] Sarah E. 11 & James 10). Unfortunately, I have been unable to trace William Carr's birth - I have tried St. Catherine's House Index & the IGI, but couldn't find anything which made any sense. Not knowing his mothers name hasn't helped either. His son, another James Carr, emigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1899, returning briefly in 1904 to see a specialist & to marry Annie Sarah SHAW of Windhill, Shipley. Does anyone have any information to help with the above research?, or can suggest where I could look next? If anyone is interested in what I have found out so far, I can forward a copy. Regards, Malcolm Carr.
Thanks Belinda for your message. I have got a copy of the original 1901 Census and was hoping to receive replies from descendents of the Newman family. I was however very interested in how well your software extractor program worked on the 1901 Census. Could you please post further details. Thanks for all your interest. Hello to all on the Rotherham list. Just reposting interests , as Tracy suggested. My interest is in the BURGIN name, from the Aston, Rawmarsh, Wales, Ecclesfield areas. The family seem to have moved from Lincolnshire, to the coal mining areas. Was this a major movement into the area? Especially Walter BURGIN, my grandfather, b. 1875 in Aston Also HARGREAVES from Rawmarsh, my grandmother Sophia HARGREAVES b. 1874 I would be very interested to hear from anyone with similar interests Sue Mann Toowoomba, Queensland >
Hi everyone, just resubmitting my interests as new members join up: My grandfather HAROLD BIRCH (1898-1977) of ROTHERHAM, had 2 younger brothers CRYIL BIRCH (1907-1967) and JAMES BIRCH (1905-?) with whom the family lost contact with many years ago, and I'd like to find out if there any descendants. All lived on or around Doncaster Road, Eastwood, Rotherham at least up until the mid 1940's. JAMES BIRCH married around 1931-32 to a girl called UNA and we think they may have had two daughters? He worked on the railways and about the time of his marraige lived on 90 St.John's Road, Eastwood, Rotherham. CYRIL BIRCH may have married later on in life to a widow LILLY CUTTS (?) after the war so may not have offspring. Their parents were JAMES BIRCH and MARY JANE SKIDMOORE who both lived at 280 Doncaster Rd, until their deaths in 1936 and 1944. MARY was a keen Chapel woman and well known at the local methodist chapel at the corner of School St/Doncaster Rd, Eastwood ~ her obituary was in the Rotherham Advertiser so she was well known. JAMES BIRCH snr had a brother EDWIN BIRCH who married BEATRICE MORTON and they lived in Oxford St, Eastwood, also off Doncaster Rd. They had at least two offspring REGINALD EDWIN BIRCH and GLADYS AMY BIRCH, who would have probably been born in the early 1900's. If any of these names rings a bell I'd love to hear from anyone. Hello all , Can anyone do us a kindness, to look at a marriage we got from St Caths, registered in WORTLEY Joseph GREAVES March qu 1869. Ken and Joan Littlewood Barnsley
Thanks Tracy I've read through the whole of the site and am exceedingly pleased to see that for once someone has catered for the Mac OS X - if they are that farsighted then it must be good. It certainly looks as though it will save a lot of time travelling to and spending time in the Library in Norwich where they have fiche copies. As parking is notoriously expensive and travelling takes time, the service will soon pay for itself in my terms. Hi Rotherham-ers! Some subscribers may already be aware of the new website facility which is being released on line next Sunday, 15th December, for those of you who haven't heard about it, the website address is: http://www.1837online.com/ Let's hope it works better than the 1901 online census! As an update on the ROTHERHAM list, we now have 60 subscribers and new members are joining every day, so, it may be an idea to post details of whoever you're researching once a week - that will also keep the list ticking over, as it does tend to keep having quiet spells. Best wishes Tracy Listowner
