The mailing lists at British-Genealogy.com have just added a new category of list, the One-Place Study list. I have become the list administrator of one of the first one for Yorkshire, for the village of Brompton by Northallerton, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. I have had an interest in Brompton since I started family history research about 18 months ago. My STAINTHORP ancestors had a farm in the village, Newstead Grange, from about the 1730's to 1899, and I started with an number of family documents about the farm, going back as far as 1805. My research has not just covered the family, but also the other families in the village, and the village in general. In the process of doing this I have built up a private mailing list of about 30 people who are also researching ancestors in the village or nearby. So it is a logical next step to set up a public mailing list for it. The obvious intention is to concentrate on the village, but each village does not exist in a vacuum, so I am happy for the list to cover matters in nearby villages and Northallerton. That is why I have posted this message to a couple of Durham mailing lists, as Brompton is only 10 miles or so from the old boundary of County Durham. A word of warning though - there are other Bromptons in Yorkshire - Brompton by Sawdon is near Scarborough, Brompton on Swale is 10 miles from 'my' Brompton, as is Patrick Brompton. It is easy to get confused, as I did a year ago, which is why I bought a book of photos of Brompton by Sawdon - and then spent days trying to fit the photos into what I knew of the village.
