    2. Can someone please explain where the town name "Helmsley Blackmoor" came from. All my old maps call Helmsley, "Helmsley Blackmoor" but I can find no one in "Helmsley" who can solve the question. Rob and William

    3. Hello Rob and William, Helmsley's name and origin is fully explained on the pages of Genuki, however, the wonderful book, written in 1822 by Thomas Langdale, entitiled 'Topographical Dictionary of Yorkshire' from which the Genuki information comes, is available on a CD, from www.yorkshireancestors.com. If you look at this website, you will see that there is a sample entry from the book - which just happens to be.......... Helmsley. Best regards, Janice Wood, Searching for ancestors in Helmsley upon the Blackmoor
