    1. [N'Yorks] Cleveland Archives - BELL

    3. During a holiday in Yorkshire last week I managed to "slip away" from visiting the relatives for a while in order to do some ancestral research. I had been sent a burial reference for Oxbridge Lane Cemetery, Stockton, for my g.g.grandfather John BELL who died at Stockton Hospital in l883. Although he had no headstone, the cemetery staff were more than helpful and took great trouble to locate the plot for me. They also told me that I could have seen the actual burial entry in the registers held at Cleveland Archives in Middlesbrough. We duly set off for Middlesbrough but, unfortunately, spent over an hour driving round in circles trying to find the Archives Office, becoming more and more confused with all the closed roads and one-way systems. With regret we abandoned the journey. If anyone more familiar with Middlesbrough is due to be researching at the Cleveland Archives in the coming weeks could I please ask a BIG favour? I am interested to know whether there is any additional information on the following two burials: John BELL, died l8.11 l883, age 66, buried Oxbridge Lane Cemetery on 20.11.l883 and Mary BELL, died l8.l2.l884, age 66, buried Oxbridge Lane Cemetery on 22.l2.l884 I know for sure that John BELL is the correct entry, however, I have been trying to find out what happened to his wife Mary. The entry above would fit her perfectly however the l884 burial for this particular Mary BELL took place from Stockton Workhouse and I can't understand how she could end up there whilst having five living sons. Also, she was not buried with the above John BELL. I was hoping the actual burial entry may have additional information. I ordered the death certificate for this Mary BELL and, under occupation it just says "unknown of Stockton". If anyone would be kind enough to check the burial entries for me I would be delighted. Kindest regards Diane Johansen
