Having responded off list to people with Readman ancestors and possible Egton connections, I thought it worthwhile mentioning the following site 'Hearts of Oak' http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/8482/HeartsOfOak/coverpage.html which includes a transcription of the book 'Hearts of Oak' - "A study of the Recusancy in the Moorlands of NorthEast Yorkshire 1569 to 1840' by the late J.L O'Connor . It covers Egton and surrounding places such as Ugthorpe, Glaisdale, Whitby. For anyone who has not come across this wonderful site before, it includes a history of recusancy, Catholic martyrs, registers and sections on specific families : Radcliffe, Smith, Salvin, Harrison, Lyth, Readman, Gallon, Hodgson, Harland, Hoggarth, Pearson (Pierson), Shaw, Child, Hutchinson, Roe (Raw), Wedgewood, Barker, Welford, Lawson, Swales, Knaggs, White, and others. I'd love to hear from anyone with connections to my ggg grandfather John Readman born 1807/08 died April 1849 and buried at Harwood Dale. I now believe he was from Egton, that he had a brother Joseph born 1808/09 Egton and that his mother Mary was born around 1772 in Egton (I don't know if Readman was her married name or if she was a 'single' mother). John married a Mary from Ebberston , though I've not found any record of a marriage (she was not Mary Lyth - that much I do know). One son ,my gg grandfather William was born according to some sources in Goathland, baptised at Harwood Dale in 1837. Other children were Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, John?. I used to think that Redman families I came across were misspelt Readmans because that was how I pronounced the name to myself, during a trip to Yorkshire however I met a distant relative who corrected me - the name is pronounced Reedman. So apologies to any Redmans I tried to appropriate to my tree. Regards Lorraine Wales
