Hello all, I have just been having another look at the CD, made in 1999, by David Sumner, who was then Chairman of the Hovingham Local History Group. It's title is 'Hovingham - the War Years' 1939 -1945. Copies are still available from David, priced at ten pounds. Email: david@radioryedale.co.uk It is presented in four main categories: Active Service - details and experiences of the 39 men and women who left the village and their loved ones, to join one or other of the services. Army Encampment - as Hovingham was used throughout the war by various army regiments. Evacuees - the names of those anxious children from Hull, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, their homes, the schools from whence they came and their gurardians whilst they lived in Hovingham village. Village Life - some aspects that were and others that were not, affected. Stories are told in pictures, text and sound files; many local people recounting their own memories. Not just for people with interest in this village, as it is probably typical of many rural communities of the day. There is tragedy, sacrifice, humour, nostalgia..the recordings are great .Yes, and in their local accent too! Proceeds from sales of this CD help towards funding the not-for-profit Radio Ryedale project.
