Hi Peter and Lila, Actually, Lofthouse & Loftus are NOT the same place. Lofthouse is in North Yorkshire and is near to Ripon/Pateley Bridge where as Loftus (where I spent most of my childhood) is on the east coast. They are about 75 miles apart! The Loftus near the east coast was known as Lofthouse during the 1800s and appears as such on some censuses etc. I know this as I, too spent my childhood near Loftus and my ancestors appear on censuses as living at Lofthouse. I was very confused about the Loftus, Lofthouse situation myself. My grandfather is stated as living in Lofthouse in the 1881 census and his birth certificate says Lofthouse. I know that it is the present day Loftus because of the numerous references that I have to other areas around there eg. Saltburn, Easington, Guisborough etc. However, according to the 1840 Pigot & Co`s British Atlas, Counties of England, today`s Loftus near the coast was known as Lofthouse and spelled as such. Todays`s Lofthouse near Ripon cannot even been located in that atlas of 1840 therefore does one assume it did not exist then or was a former village later renamed Lofthouse. If anyone lives near present day Lofthouse (near Ripon), it sure would be interesting to know the history of the name and when the place came into existence! Marlene
