Ailsa, Whilst our Royal Mail service does ask that we provide a Postcode (or Zipcode as you call it) on our letters and parcels, they are a pretty good outfit at delivering items that don't have one supplied. I'm not aware of any publicly available source that would allow you to look up the Postcode for the address you are interested in. I suggest you send it off without the Postcode and rely on the Royal Mail to deliver it. regards, Peter -----Original Message----- From: Ailsa Petrie [mailto:ampetrie@ihug.co.nz] Sent: 29 September 2003 08:57 To: ENG-NORTH-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [N'Yorks] Non Gen - Info on Zip Codes Hello List I have been given an address of a possible relation-by-marriage in North Yorkshire and it doesn't have a Zip code. Is it compulsory to add the Zip code to an English address? If I omit it, will my letter still be delivered or will it be returned to me? Is there any way in which I could find what the Zip code is? I would like to make sure before I write. Suggestions welcome. Peter, Thank you for your reply. Here in New Zealand we don't use postal codes to any great extent - street name and number and town are all that is necessary. In some places I have read that the postal code is necessary, hence my enquiry. If I had thought a but more, I would have realised that "zip" code is the American terminology, too. I think I will try the address I have been given, with my return address on the back and if it comes back to me, then so be it. Why not log on to the website for uk postcodes? You have to register but it is free and all you do is enter the address and it will provide you with a postal code for anywhere in the UK. The Royal Mail website address is www.royalmail.com Kind regards Tracie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ailsa Petrie" <ampetrie@ihug.co.nz> To: <ENG-NORTH-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2003 6:29 AM Subject: Re: [N'Yorks] Non Gen - Info on Zip Codes > Peter, > > Thank you for your reply.
