Susan I don't have access to the 1871 census , but in the Index to the Whitby 1851 census on folio 225 there is a Mary J. Dixon age 6. Also on the same folio there are;- Ann 49, George 4, Hannah 1, John 44, Judith 22, Margaret 22, Maria 60, Martha 42, Mary 24, Patrick 3, and Thomas 18. All born Whitby except Maria who was born Egton. There is another Dixon family on the next folio no. 226. May be worth looking at this Census if you haven't already done so. Some are also in the 1881 census. Regards Peter. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Tudor-Coulson" <susantudor-coulson@blueyonder.co.uk> To: <ENG-NORTH-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2003 7:18 AM Subject: [N'Yorks] DIXON - Whitby > > All > > Is there someone who would kindly check the 1871 census for me and let me > know about a family called DIXON living in Church Street, Whitby? > > I have an Ann Elizabeth ("Annie") DIXON born on 10th April 1871 to a Mary > Jane DIXON (no father's details on the birth certificate). I've found them on the 1881 census but I just want to check whether Mary Jane was actually resident at some place in Church Street or had given it as a one-off address of convenience instead of, eg, the Boggs Yard Workhouse following the birth of her child. There seem to be several families of Dixons in and around Church Street, largely involved in the jet manufacturing trade, which seems to confirm family oral history that some of the Whitby lot were involved in it. I'm aware of a Mary Jane Dixon who was born in Whitby c1844 and of one who married in 1872, ie the year after the birth of Annie. It's tempting to think of them as one and the same, but I prefer to check rather than assume :) Regards STC
