    3. We need to be a bit careful here - this is a contemporary US association, and may not be applicable to the trade of "cordwainer" in the period and area of interest in UK. My understanding was that the title "cordwainer" was protected by a guild, and that it required a guild-approved apprenticeship to be completed to become a "cordwainer". The title of "master" is usually used to refer to one who took apprenticeships for this purpose. Thus, the widow of a cordwainer could inherit his tools and even his business, but could not herself become a cordwainer without undergoing an apprenticeship...and I had thought that they were not then open to women or girls. This, of course does not mean that women could not make shoes as skilfully as men...just that they faced obstacles in getting training and recognition.
