    3. Today we went a-wandering on the North Yorkshire Moors and had a look in All Saints Church, Hawnby. There we picked up an information sheet which contained the following. I do hope the writer does not mind me quoting this grand story- "Why is the village of Hawnby in two halves? This we do know. One fine summers day in the mid 18th century two Hawnby men called CHAPMAN and CORNFORTH were labouring up on the Moor. Having had some lunch, they lay down to snooze. But when they awoke and compared notes it turned out that they had both dreamed vivid dreams that God had spoken to them to repent and be converted. That evening they spoke to their friend JOHN HUGILL, a farmer at Ladhill Gill and found that he was feeling the same way. Then, as they were wondering what to do about it, a newspaper announced that the famous Preacher, John Wesley was to preach in Newcastle upon Tyne. The three men set off along the drove road North. They walked all the way to Newcastle (At an Inn on the way it is recorded that they tasted tea for the first time and liked it!) They heard John Wesley and walked home again- the first Methodists in the neighbourhood. Mr TANCRED of Arden Hall, their landlord, was a Church Of England Man and did not approve of Methodists. He immediately expelled them from their homes up on the hill. The only place they could settle was down by the bridge. On July 7th 1757 John Wesley recorded in his diary how he 'rode from Osmotherly over one of the pleasantest parts of England to Hawnby'. He remarked that the 'zealous' landlord action had turned out to be a 'singular kindness' as it had served to create such a vibrant little community of 40 or 50 Methodists all living together there" Sandra Wilson
