Thanks Lee for your kind offer. This is what I know. My G.Grandfather WILLIAM HARTLEY married my G.Grandmother RUTH MARIA BAMBURY (nee Smith) in Scarborough in 1871. On their marriage certificate both are listed as being widowed. Curiosity prompts me to try and find out who was the first wife. Various newspaper cuttings (Scarborough Mercury and Gazette) mention (a) the death of Sarah Ann Hartley on 1 November 1868 aged 4 weeks and (b) an inquest report of Ann Hartley who died on 24 November 1868 in very ignominious circumstances - she collapsed and died whilst drunk! No mention of the infant death is made but William did say she had been "lately addicted to drink" The reasons I feel she could be his first wife are 1. William described as a "Fancy Dealer" 2. His address on the marriage certificate is Princess Street - the same as the inquest. 3. Sarah Ann is a family name from way back. Although Andy gives us reports from the Malton Messenger I notice that many events occur in Scarborough and I feel that if they are "mine" they will eventually show up. If you can locate them that would be just great. Regards, Ruth Lowden
