    3. Hi in earlier records I have found it is quite normal for the mothers name not to be mentioned. Normally I look for other baptisms and marriages that could fit in that parish to see if a picture builts and then start working my way around surrounding parishes. Though the I G I or familysearch is not in my view wholly reliable as it has been created in some instances by unsupported data from individuals however read with Philmores parishes book which give the dates and parishes registers put on the I G I by the church itself it can help avoid a lot of work. regards john ferguson ----- Original Message ----- From: <Madbadrob3@aol.com> To: <ENG-NORTH-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2003 5:04 PM Subject: Re: [N'Yorks] Request For Help Please ? > Lee, > > The mothers names didnt always appear on the baptism records however this > wasnt the norm. 3. Hi John, You could also try using Hugh Wallis's website which uses only those Batch numbers from the IGI which relate to actual Parish Registers to avoid receiving patron submissions which you often get in amongst the results from the IGI on Familysearch. With Hugh's site you can only search using the surname, no other details can be included, but I find it very useful even with my Smith families, to be able to go straight to a particular parish and search. Between both Familysearch and Hugh Wallis's sites I get some interesting results. Go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page Whatever you find on the IGI should always be checked against the film of the original register because mistakes do happen in the transcribing onto the IGI as I have found in the past. But the IGI on line is a good guide, I would be lost without it living here in Spain as I do. I began last year to go to the LDS in Barcelona to order and then look at the films of the original registers, and other items of interest, for those entries found on the IGI, I am busy trying to catch up with the backlog of entries to be checked that I have. Regards Jenny DeAngelis.
