Helen replied as follows to my first request> > Now, I had a look at the 1851 census index to the Guisborough area > HO107/2375, which includes Marske (by the sea) > > at folio 102, which is Brotton parish (includes Brotton, Kilton, > Saltburn, Skinningrove), there was > > Richard SHARVEL age 61 born SSX Rye > Rebecca " " 62 " SSX Seaford Have found a bit out about these two in the last couple of hours. They were married at Seaford Parish Church, Sussex on 20 May 1816 and had children as follows: Martha SHARVELL b 1816 at Seaford, bp 15 Sept 1816 at Newhaven Louisa (later Mrs HINDSON) b abt 1818 in Marske Richard b abt 1822 in Marske John b abt 1826 in Marske I found this little tidbit on a web site "Rebecca LEVETT married Richard SHARVELL who was from Rye. He was in the coastguard service. If a coastguard married a local girl (as in this case), he was transferred virtually immediately to a new post a very long way away. This was because of the smuggling activities, and a local girl may well have connections with local gangs. She could therefore put the word about, about the movements of the excise and military gleaned from her husband. The LEVETT family were great smugglers. The SHARVELLs ended up in Staithes, Yorkshire." Source: Mrs Gill Couper, Horsell, Surrey. Would appreciate any further information about this - about Staithes in particular. Would Staithes tie in with Marske and Brotton (which I understand includes Brotton, Kilton. Saltburn and Skinningrove). And is there a Methodist Chapel close to any of these places that would have been operating back in the 1820's? Best wishes John
