I am a new lister and hope I am on the right list. Firstly, Mary Ann SHARVELL died in Wolverhampton on 1st January 1901 aged 79. Her obituary was apparently published in the North Eastern Daily Gazette - which I understand is a Middlesborough paper. Is any KS going to somewhere that keeps old copies and can look that obituary up for me. Her husband appears to have been John SHARVELL, who was 74, born Mouske, York, Secretary to a Building Society, in the 1901 census. Cannot trace them at all on the 1881 census, but believe they were in Wolverhampton. And where is Mouske? Sounds like Eskimo territory. I know it is cold in North Yorkshire. I have never ventured north of Sheffield myself. Many thanks John Cullwick near Silverstone in rural Northants

I suppose it is always possible that if Mary A was Richard's wife, she may have married John later, perhaps if they were both widowed, although strictly speaking this was illegal at that time. Now, I had a look at the 1851 census index to the Guisborough area HO107/2375, which includes Marske (by the sea) at folio 102, which is Brotton parish (includes Brotton, Kilton, Saltburn, Skinningrove), there was Richard SHARVEL age 61 born SSX Rye Rebecca " " 62 " SSX Seaford They were the only people wit this name in the index. I wonder if they could be John & Richard's parents? Hopefully this gives you a few more leads to follow. Good luck, -- Helen Oram
