    1. Re: Help with North Yorkshire Parish Names
    2. Colin Hinson
    3. Hi Pat, Some additional comments on your message: 1. The list of parishes on the Genuki site is accurate up to 1834. After that, civil parishes were created and so there can be some confusion. Also after that date, some parishes were split due to the rising population, however these were mainly in the West Riding - the majority of parishes remained the same up to at least 1900 in the East and North Ridings. 2. You seem to be confusing parishes with places. A Parish is the area served by the Parish Church. The Parish Church is in the Parish Town (even if it's a village!), and the lists of the Parishes for Yorkshire are given in the 4 parts of Yorkshire listed at the bottom of the main Genuki Yorkshire page (3 Ridings + The Ainsty and City of York), there being around 200 parishes in each of the Ridings. So, if you are looking for a parish for pre 1900 and it doesn't occur in the lists, then it almost certainly wasn't a parish or it's spelt incorrectly. 3. I am not aware of any places missing from the "Where is it" lists (hamlets, villages or towns) in the Ryedale area (i.e. Hemsley to Scarborough along the river Derwent etc. (If anyone knows different, then please tell me). Therefore, if you have places which don't appear on the list, then either the name has been changed (by Chinese Whispers, accents, etc), or the "place" is actually a single house. My personal opinion is that all 3 of your places are mis-spellings/readings of Malton. Take Fowston for instance: go to the list of all the places in Yorkshire (you did read the notes for the "Where is it lists" didn't you :-) ) and do a search for "wston". All the "hits" for this are in the West Riding, including the nearest sounding name of "Fewston", and so are unlikely to be correct. Hope this helps, Best wishes, Colin Hinson In the village of Blunham in Bedfordshire U.K. Webmaster for the Genuki Yorkshire pages: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ Old and Rare Yorkshire Books on searchable CDroms: http://cdroms.blunham.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hello Listers, A Sarah SMITH born c.1806 married William AR(R)UNDALE on 25 Dec 1826 at Old Malton - both are noted in the parish records as "of this parish" i.e. of the parish of Old Malton. However, census records provide different information: 1851 census for Old Malton shows Sarah as being born at Falton; 1861 census for Old Malton shows her as born as Spanton; and 1871 census for Ryton shows her as born at Fowston. I've checked the "Where is it" link on the http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ site and was unable to find any of the abovementioned parishes. Does anyone have any ideas as to where Sarah may have been born? Regards, Pat Smith
