    3. Hi, In answer to the ones who asked these questions The Scarborough Library sent me a copy of Ryedale Historian 4 Pages 55-63 1969 from an article by Arthur H. Whitaker `Coal Mining in Bransdale & Farndale in the 18th Cent.` It is an essay based almost entirely on the original documents deposited by the late Earl of Feversham in NorthallertonArchives Cat No 2EW 262 & 230 I also copied some information ( I think from Leeds Library) from `The North Yorks Moor Landscape Heritage` It does say that` miners burrowed to wrest a living in conditions which beggar description` Bilsdale Survey1687-1851 which is the census North Yorkshire County Record Office Publication No 23 Jan 1980 I bought it at a Family History Fair so not sure is in print.I will be happy to look up any names up for anybody. The first dated 1637 is a Survey of Bilsdale George Earle of Rutland who must have owned the land then. eg Margery Jackson holds by lease one tenement called Farehill, one barne, one oxehowse one cowhouse close meadow called Lathe Close containing 2 acres . It then names all the meadows she rents & how many acres they were. The price underneath was 41s. 8d Hope this is any help to you, Mary --------------------------------- Win a BlackBerry device from O2 with Yahoo!. Enter now.

    3. Hi Mary, Many thanks for the information, the documents you mention sound like something I should look into further. For information to others on the list I purchased my copy of the Bilsdale surveys from Northallerton records office a few years ago now. It might be worth enquiring with them if they have any copies left.
