Hello List, My relative appears in the 1851 Census as having been born in "GREEN HILL, YORKS." In 1861 this place name appears as "GUNHOHILL, NEW YORKSHIRE". He was born around 1805. I have scoured quite detailed local maps/Ordnance Survey maps but cannot spot a "Greenhill" or "Green Hill" anywhere likely, also the YorksGen Place Names. If it helps those of you who know the area, John HAMMELL's second wife, Dorothy CROFT was born in CARPBERBY. Also, WEST BURTON features strongly as the place of birth for their children during the 1830s to 1850s. (One of the sons appears in 1871 living in STONEBECKUP). At the same time, father, older John, is living in BURTON-cum-WALDEN parish, WEST BURTON and states he was born in "GREENAHILL". Could somebody help, please, with locating this "Greenhill/Greenahill? My second question is where to go for Marriage and Death records. I am fairly certain that the family was Nonconformist. Yours, Julie
