Hi Gill, I agree with others that it definitely looks like the surname is Crane, the writing is pretty clear. They are not next door to the Peters family but are living in the Peters household, assuming that the Peters family are yours. Each household in the census is ended by two backward strokes in the column to the left of the last name included in that particular household. No such backward strokes are shown between the Peters and the Cranes. Added to that the Cranes, and the Mathews, are all down as Boarders meaning they are boarding with the Peters family rather than having a household of their own. It could be that they are down as Crane because that is how the enumerator either heard the name when it was spoken to him or how he read it from the schedule as written by one of the people in the household. An enumerator from Yorkshire might not have understood a Liverpudlian accent too clearly, they are quite distinct. What name do you think it should be if they were related to your Peters family?
