    3. Hi Gordon, You WERE posh then, I had to settle for an old annual from the local jumble sale, for the cost of a threepenny bit, sometimes a penny, that annual was thick enough to sit on the one skate (never had two by the way) and steered it by moving the book, okay until you fell off going around corners, Another money saving trick was going to the pictures. After I had completed my paper round I was able to dash uptown and by standing outside the various cinemas, for about the 5.30pm showing, I would ask couples if they 'would take me in please'. If the film was a U, it was okay, I needed an adult if it was A. If I was lucky enough someone would not take me in, but also pay the 1/-d admission price. Even better, sometimes they 'elevated' me to 'upstairs and brought me an ice cream from the usherette at half time. Never thought it was wrong to speak to strangers. Now to see just ONE film costs over a fiver, and no fish and chips afterwards. regards John still looking for ANY of the undermentioned names ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon Neal" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 8:43 PM Subject: [YKS] Yorks. in 40's and 50's > Hi,All, > Reading all these emails of memories of the 40's and 50's leaves me wondering whether to laugh or cry. > My grandchildren keep pestering me to tell them what life was like as a child. Now ,I don't have to worry. It's all been done for me: just press the "Forward" button. > Seeing kids on their modern skateboards reminds me of mine. It was a piece of wood ,about 2 ft X 1ft, which was placed on an old metal roller skate. We sat on the board ,with knees crossed , and with good balance could sail all the way to the bottom of the street. With such small wheels, an un-noticed pebble or small hole could prove quite dissasterous. You learned the 'hard way' to place your hands flat on top of the board; no knuckles underneath. > As it sometimes happens ,somebody spoils kids' fun. Local Council workmen. The first two would pour buckets of tar on the road, the next pair spread it with brooms and the last ones would throw shovelsful of pebbles.Even after the steamroller had passed over ,the 'track' was ruined. > Not to worry ,though. There were plenty of other ways to keep ourselves occupied and out of mischief. > Waiting to hear more. Gordon Neal. Shuswap Lakes, B.C.
