    3. By the way Laura, what year are you looking for in the census? Sometimes too Jack is a pet name for John. In 1901 there is a family, with a William and Margaret, childrens names, Sarah, William, John, Leslie, and Ann in East Witton, Leyburn. In 1891 childrens names, Ralph S, Sarah J, Mary E, Ann, William R and John. In 1881 there is a Margaret Hardy and children Ralph and Sarah Jane as visitors in a family called Stott in East Witton Without. If this is the family you are looking for I can give you further details. 3. Hi, > Sometimes too Jack is a pet name for John. We have to be a bit careful though. The births indexes show that plenty of children were actually named Jack, Betsy, Tom, Sally, Fred and so on. One recurring problem with transcripts is that names on census pages frequently give an abbreviated name followed by a colon, as in Eliza: On most occasions, this will have been transcribed as Eliza and not Elizabeth. One can never win! Jim Balmer Website: freespace.virgin.net/jim.balmer

A transcription is always done exactly as written. When entering data in a family file, I will use the "shortened" or "pet" name if it's listed. If I come upon a second source with a longer or variant name, I will then use that as a primary with the pet name in quotes following. Brian Cartwright
