Researching my wife's family, three branches of which had holdings in Bilsdale. They are Dale, York and Hugill (various spellings). I would appreciate any information regarding these families and/or Bilsdale. There is a Bilsdale Priory. Would there be Parish records, or were they registered elsewhere? Thanks Howard

Howard, I have a Hannah DALE, born Bilsdale 1845, daughter of John DALE, farmer. A witness to her marriage to John KILVINGTON in 1875 was Thomas DALE, possibly a brother, as her father was deceased. As she married into my family, I have done no research on her background. However, an initial look at the IGI, indicates the possibility her parents may have been John DALE and Ann MITCHEL, married Helmsley, 16 December 1824. Possible siblings named Philip, Thomas, Tamer, John, Ann, Mary (two) & Martin. Interestingly, Hannah named one of her own daughters Tamer Elizabeth and I always wondered where it came from. Bilsdale is part of the Helmsley parish and the family above were all born/baptised Bilsdale Midcable, in the same area, apparently. There is also a Bilsdale Westside, to confuse the issue still further. All of this would have to be confirmed by reading the Parish Registers. Films of Helmsley Parish Registers and Bishops Transcripts for Bilsdale are available to order from the LDS system, if you have access to one of their libraries.
