    3. hello listers Am new to this list and trying to find more info on the following Earnshaws: 1901 census William born 1868 in Darlington Wife Emily born Hornton Oxfordshire various children including Eveline (according to 1901 census, although actually Evelyn), Mildred - Sparkhill 1893, William - Sparkhill 1899, Ida - Sparkhill 1901 They also had his mother Martha living with them - born 1826 Plymouth 1881 census William was living with his family in Darlington: Father Richard - born 1834 in Craike (Crayke) Yorkshire Mother Martha - born 1826 in Plymouth Devon Sister Ann - born 1870 in Cockerton Durham Can find no record of marriage of William and Martha, or even Williams birth, although I have found plenty of Earnshaws born during the relevant dates in Easingwold (just up the road from Crayke) Would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem, perhaps with other census returns? Robin Townsend. PS. My elderly aunt maintains that an ancestor was mayor of York, is she living in a dream world or does this have a basis in fact?

Hello Robin, Darlington Registrar has 2 William EARNSHAWs registered in 1868 - you could contact them to see if the parents of either are Richard & Martha before you purchase any certificates. <http://www.darlington.gov.uk/Living/Register+Office/Register+Office.htm> I assume you mean the marriage of Richard & Martha :) Free BMD has these on the same page Marriages Jun 1865 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Boothroyd Martha Easingwold 9d 601 Earnshaw Richard Easingwold 9d 601 Smith John Garbutt Easingwold 9d 601 from this you cannot be sure it is the right marriage - I would wait till you have Martha's maiden name from William's birth certificate before you order anything. However, there is a visiting Martha, unmarried in the 1861 census, from the right area of Devon in West Yorkshire Charlotte Berry abt 1838 Marsden, Yorkshire, England Daughter Almondbury Yorkshire milliner Jane Berry abt 1810 Honley, Yorkshire, England Wife Almondbury Yorkshire Nathaniel Berry abt 1811 Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England Head Almondbury Yorkshire cloth fuller Martha Boothroyd abt 1825 Devonport Visitor, servant Almondbury Yorkshire RG9/3256 Registration district: Huddersfield Sub-registration district: Almondbury ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Folio: 62 Page: 30 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 147 I can't find them in the Ancestry 1871 index. -- Helen Oram
